I Just Got A 1988 Ford Ranger Xlt 2.3 Liter 4 Banger. When I Got It, It Had A Bad Miss So I Replaced The Normal Stuff ....plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Had The Ignition Module Bench Tested And It Was Ok. After All That It Still Had A Miss So I Asked Around And One Guy Told Me A Burnt Valve Was Possible. I Still Need To Do A Compression Test. Well I Just So Happened To Have A Brand New Msd 6al Ignition Box And A Brand New Blaster 2 Coil. So I Hooked That Up And Believe It Or Not It Actually Helped The Miss At Idle And Normal "through Town" Speeds. However, When I Take The Truck Out On The Interstate It Lacks Power.....granted Its Only A 4 Banger It Should Have A Little More Ass Than It Does, In My Opinion. Anyway When I Get It Up Around 60 Or Above. It Misses. If I Watch The Tach The Tach Actually Jumps From 2500 To 3000 Just For A Split Second And Its Intermitent. One Other Thing.....when I Had The Ignition Module Tested I Pulled The Distributor Completely Out To Get The Module Off. When I Put The Distributor Back In I Had A Hard Time Getting It In Correctly.......hahaha......knowing Better Than To Do This.....i Didnt Mark The Distributor Luckily I Have A Chiltons Manual. However When I Set The Time On It I Brought The Number One Cylinder Up To T.d.c. And Checked The Timing Mark On The Crank And It Was @ Zero. For Some Reason I Thought That I Had Read Somewhere That Factory Was Set To 10 Degrees Over 0 And Also I Thought That I Read That There Is Some Kind Of A Plug That I Need To Pull Off Of A Wiring Harness In Order To Set The Time Correctly. Any And All Help At This Point Will Be Appreciated. Thanks

Greg

In order to set the timing correctly, you need to remove the SPOUT plug. Removal of that plug prevents the computer from advancing the timing, allowing you to set the required 10* base line ignition timing. The SPOUT plug is usually black or gray and should be hanging off of the wiring harness section that goes to the distributor's ignition module. It'll be about 3-4" away from the distributor.

Tough to advise further on the miss until you do a compression check.

Also, just curious here, why do you capitalize the first letter of nearly ever word?

Thanks for the input. Now that I look back at the capitalization of almost every word I'm not real sure why I did that. I thought that I had written the whole thing in caps in the first place. (BY THE WAY.....GREAT ATTENTION TO DETAIL)

Also, no capitals after the dot dot dots...

Interesting!

Greg,

Don't see why anyone should be offended. Just a follow-on observation to Dave R's keen attention to detail.

Cheers

T.

Not sure I'd call it keen attention to detail. If you just look at the paragraph without reading it something "looks" wrong.

Nothing to apologize for, I just found it....different.
