High RPM Miss

Yea^^ True... i hear all states will go sooner than later...
but still it sucks... ANyone else have some 2 cents?

This is a total stupid idea but is it legal to run 2 CATS? Can you get it smogged anywhere else or is that the only place?

I would try to run as much fuel out of the gas tank and then put nothing but fresh fuel into it with no additives and see if that does anything.

I would say you can't run two cats because it would not pass the visual on the inspection. It would be considered a modified emission system. My problem with this is I don't know what causes the NOX to be high. Someone with a little more savy with emissions should be able to direct you a little better. My first thought is the cat. The problem with my first thought is I don't know the difference between NOX AND hydrocarbons. The cat is designed to lower hydrocarbons. I know this because one tester/repairman told me the way they test a cat is to drill two holes, one in front of the cat and one in back of the cat and they test hydrocarbons in and hydrocarbons out.

Since i didnt fail by much im gonna do the vapor can tomorrow... throw some HEET in there and run the crap out of it and leave it running until hes ready that way its nice and hot unlike last time....

Anyone else have any last ideas? and another thing... im getting pretty horrible gas mileage i bought gas for 2.97 and put $15 in only becuase i put high octane in and got like 88 miles on it... partial freeway... is there any way to lean it out? besides the idle screws?

I was told not long ago by a very savy senior gentleman mechanic that the most important adjustment on a carburetor regarding mileage is the float level. That combined with the idle/air adjustment is the two majors. I got a carb from a company called "Guarantee Carburetor" rebuilders and the Ranger ran real nice, but the mileage stunk. Something like 12-14 mpg. And the exhaust pipe was real sooty black. I sent it in for another rebuild and when I got it back the mileage is good now and the exhaust is dark gray at the tail pipe and she runs fine. Maybe you should look into the carb a second time......It stands to reason if it won't pass smog and is using a lot of gas, the carb could be dumping fuel down the intake.

Quick Update!

Dropped the gas tank... cleaned it out... my sending unit and float thing was RUSTY and had a bunch of crap there in the tank... so im air drying it now...

Plan

Clean tank
Oil change
new filters
8.8 out of my bed
Heet
and let it run nice and hot before the test!

You got an 8.8...nice, cant wait to see you put it under your truck.

Haha yea go check out the pics in my build thread!

and i cant wait either.. all my damn time is going into friggin smog!

o well the 8.8 is worth the wait...

I just looked real close and noticed that you have a 5 speed tranny. They didn't come out with those until 84. Unless you got the first one with it.

My '85 has a bunch of things it shouldn't too... get some age on something and people start mixing stuff around.

You sure? i have a close friend Tim95621 also has a 83 with a 5 speed tranny and he is the 2nd owner and the orig worked for ford...

I dont doubt it im just saying two right here in sac Hmm

I've read that the 5-speed came out in 84. Of course when they make an 84 model, it comes out in 83. So your truck was manufactured in 83 but it may be an 84 model.

Generally more people know what model year their truck is than what year it was built. After all, it is the one on the registration.

Edit: You can email your VIN to Ford and find out what your truck was built with originallly.

Looks like there was a 5 speed available in '83:

I've never heard that the TK5 was unavailable in '83, just that the 4 speed disappeared after '83 or '84.
