Hey guys, well I'm from Canada and its cold up here! So when I start my truck it takes awhile to warm up but I drive it until it does. However, until it gets warm its about 500-1000 rpms faster than it should be at any given speed. I thought it was just staying in third but if i turn O/D off (4 speed auto trans) then the rpms jump up ever more. So its in fourth but revving higher than it should be for any given speed until things warm up. My uneducated mind wants to say something like torque converter not locking up or something? Anyone know whats going on and if its normal or a problem? Thanks guys

It sounds normal. It keeps it at a higher RPM when its cold to warm the motor up. Mine does it but it stops once i put it in gear so im not real sure.

my truck dosent have a rev gauge so i cant tell you how much it is reving. but i noticed my truck dose the same thing when its cold out. i think it is normal for it to do that thou. so the motor warms up faster by shifting later and reving higher

Ok it warmed up here (close to melting) and the elevated rpms thing went away. Like the truck goes into normal rpm mode while the needle is still on C. I don't get it. "Elevated Rpm mode" apparently only happens when the weather outside is cold and not the engine? hmm...

your engine runs in 'open loop' until the engine reaches operating temp, then it switches to 'closed loop' mode.

Im in MI it cold here too :). I have the same issue and Ive never had any issues because of it. I think its normal.

Its burning my fuelz! I hate winter drinking...its like my truck drinks its problems away in winter. Why must gas be so expensive...

Fuel economy suck in the winter. Consider adding some lucas oil stabilizer. it adds for me about a 20% increase in fuel economy.

With the downside being its harder to start in the cold.

Hmm...I will keep that in mind...I should really have synthetic in there too but I was poor at the time of my last oil change
