My 05 3.0 has 46000 miles on it and idles a little high/rough at startup and sometimes when sitting at a light. I know it is normal at startup, but is it possible the truck needs a tune up. Another thing is sitting there with the truck idling sometimes I hear some kind of click (not like a lifter or broken rod), I can't identify it it only does it at idle as well. Is it possible the exhaust on it is to restrictive. my 97 2.3 ran rough until I put on dual exhaust then it smoothed right out. Sorry for the rambling just wondering about it.

My '99 3.0 always had what I thought was a slightly rough idle, right from the showroom, regular or premium petrol, despite the tach "showing" 900RPM, which I consider a high idle. (Years later, OBD-II scanner would show the INDICATED 900rpm was more like 780 actual...)

But, still, I thought manual tranny in neutral, no load, engine warm, a V-6 should idle smoother than that... sometimes I would even heel-toe it up to 12-1500RPM at long lights, but everything else was A-OK so I let it ride...

Then a couple years ago the IAC went bad. Replaced it with aftermarket part (GP Sorenson, IIRC) from Advance Auto... SMOOTHED it right out. Ain't that a kick in the head... FoMoCo strikes again.

It's a $54, easy to replace, up-top part, if it really bothers you, and you're up for some experimentation.

I have never driven a 3.0 with perfectly smooth idle. In fact, I have never driven an RBV with perfectly smooth idle. Unless you have noticed a change in the way the truck idles over time/miles, I would not worry about it.

The IAC can sometimes cause idling issues. My Explorer had high idle when I first got it (around 950 RPM) because of a dirty IAC valve. Don't replace it yet, just clean it out well with some electronic parts cleaner. With such low miles, it may not even be very dirty.

If you are just hearing a single click that happens every so often when stopped, that's just the A/C compressor kicking on/off.
