I've got a strange problem on my hands with my 95' Ranger, 2.3L.

Basically, since it's the 95' model, no matter what position I have the climate control in, the A/C compressor engages. Obviously I don't need the thing in the winter, so I unplugged it.

Now, my idle is greatly improved, except when coasting. Basically, whenever I shift into neutral and coast to a stop light, the RPM stays at an exact and constant 2000.

However, as soon as I come to a complete stop, where the truck is not rolling even slightly, the RPM drops down to about 900, normal. No matter how long I coast, it will stay at 2000 until I come to a stop.

I plugged the compressor back in, and the problem goes away, it drops to 900 while coasting.

Any ideas? This is really weird...

not strange or weird... just normal crapola for the 2.3... lol
things to check
IAC clean it first..
TPS
PCV check a/o replace
any other vac leaks

high idle coasting is normal. it helps get it back into gear if you wanted to.

your a/c is also supposed to run when you're on defrost, and it helps a lot.

check to verify the a/c is running in vent position

See if you still have the problem when the fan is in the "off" position.

My truck was running bad because the AC had leaked to the point where it kept clicking on and off since there wasn't enough pressure...so the truck kept revving itself as the AC clicked on and off, it did this in just about every setting but "off" once I found out what it was doing I had a shop let out the remaining pressure in the lines to keep it from clicking on at all and the problem went away. I'll just charge it back up when I need my AC in the summer. Better than letting it all leak back out through winter.
