When I am backing up, then going back into first, or when shifting into first when I let the clutch out, I hear a high frequency "clunk". It is not something that seems too serious, but it is annoying and I would like to find it before the problem gets to be any worse. I have already checked the u-joints, and the front end is tight. The only thing I can come up with is the slip joint on the rear driveshaft. The noise happens in 2 and 4 wheel drive. Its a stock 99 4x4.

Thanks!

clunks are low frequency, clicks are high frequency... not sure what you mean here...

Check the slip joint on the rear drive shaft. Take it apart, clean it out and re-lubricate with with PTFE lubricant.

i don't understand what you mean by "high frequency" when i hear that, i think "tick", low frequency makes me think "clunk" even just think of the way those words sound...

i'm just trying to understand better what it is you're hearing is it a constant clunk clunk clunk clunk, or just a single one?

i've had vehicles that make weird noises as i ride the clutch into 1st, but nothing else...

actually, my ranger (07) makes one loud crack when i let the clutch out, into 1st, if i'm even remotely aggressive on the clutch... someitmes 2-3 times as i'm riding it, if i'm going hard enough

It is just a single clunk, and it happens when the clutch is out, not when I am riding it going into first. I don't have to be that aggressive on it either. Sorry for my choice of "high frequency", it was a bad choice of words. It is more like what you had said, low frequency.

I had the same problem on my 99 and 02 Rangers. On both they replaced the OE steel rear driveshaft with an aluminum one on warranty. Lube the slip yoke first, if that doesn't work then look for a used aluminum unit.
