i put some h4 hid's in my conversion headlights, and have a question. first off they are dimmer then my h4 halogen bulbs, and on high beams they dont go as far. they have this metal plate thing on them

do i need to remove this thing? its held on by 2 phillips head screws. looking at the headlights when they are on, the top half of the lamp is lit up on low beam, and the bottom on high. the hole lamp isnt lit up like it was with the halogen. they are 8000k bulbs

any ideas? or are hid's supposed to be this way? other then them not going as far on high or low beam i love them. i tried adjusting the lamps but didnt really help and i ran out of adjustment

other hid bulbs ive seen dont have the metal thing. could i have put the bulbs in upside down or something?

First off...your bulbs are illegal. No HID conversion is legal anywhere in North America. Sorry.

The metal piece is for both support of the bulb, and a makeshift cut off for the light output from the bulb. If you remove it, the light will not reflect properly and blind everyone you point your truck at.

My bet is that you bought a cheap kit.

The kit I bought are street legal and aren't a cheap kit. Those are just some pics I found. The rounded dome on the end, what's it for? My headlamps already have that. The dome and the other shroud piece are individually removable. Could I remove the dome on the light?

What makes you think they are street legal... the only way they are is if it is either A) A completely new housing or B) Projectors within the housing.. and they have to be DOT approved.

i just finished not even an hour ago in my 88 bronco.....can't wait till the morning to try them....but i did not get the dual headlight kit.....going to convert some fog lights for my high beems

Well I did get new housings with them, and the housing has the same shroud on the inside, I was wondering if I should remove the shroud on the bulb so they reflect right in the housing, and maybe increase light output. If they aren't legal the cops don't really care about that around here...unless u drive a civic

Here's the housings. They are almost identical to my old h4 halogen ones

mine is that "projector" style.....oh crap...late for work.....haha

i would just take the metal housing off the hid since theres already one in the headlight it self!!!

HID's need a projector to properly focus the light output of the bulb. With a reflector based housing like your using you have to shield a huge portion of the bulb to control where the light goes. Shielding the bulb will obviously cut down on light output.

Your best bet for an HID light UPGRADE (upgrade in caps, because just dropping in HID bulbs is NOT an upgrade) is to get a full projector and a true D2S or D2R bulb. Those bulbs are native formats for HID's and not a HID crammed into a "Conventional" tabbed bulb base. This also opens you up to being able to get replacement bulbs from local auto parts stores and not just your shady eBay dealer.

Here is a link to full projector kits.

I wanna do hids but I need the conversion from sealed beam and can't find a complete kit anywhere for my 88 b2. Any suggestions?

I am thinkin bout doing this as well. But I have a 90. I don't have actual possesion of it yet, I should next week, so I haven't been able to inspect everything. Does the 1990 BII's have sealed beams?
