Meet my daughter first truck I’m building for her I’ve got a few questions though for the true guys or gals whom have done it I’ve got a 1988 ford ranger xlt automatic 4x4 I’m wanting to replace the 2.9 as I know it needs a “cylinder head” so I wanna swap out a 1994 Ford Explorer 4.0 2x4 basically want the motor I’m buying complete with a bad trans can I make this work with what you have here essentially? Also if you know could I could the same thing with a 1997/1998 Ford Explorer I think it be cool to try and make that dash work even if a lot of work would be needed. Or simply should I replace the head an head bolts gasket sealer and etc. spending about the same for what I’ll pay for either explorers

Are you planning on doing the work yourself? If so, I say maybe fix the 2.9, it will be way less headache, and working out bugs later. Besides that there's tons of articles around here on motor swaps, and 2.9's, check em out...

I’ve read a few of the threads and it seems simple enough play and play for the most rerun wires and have the reliability of a stronger motor I am planning on doing all the work this upcoming weekend I’ve got threads saved but the was using a 92 explorer and I’d say 5speed versus I me using auto em with electronic

Sound like your heart is set on swapping in that 4.0. It is a great motor. 5 speed is way more fun anyways. Good luck happy trails.
