Hey guys lost old had a few questions about tranny

On vacation my transmission died ( wont run out of second gear ) and I'm just wondering I have a 98 ranger v6 4wd switchable 2.8 or 2.9 can't remember now can I swap it out with any auto tranny past 95 when they changed them or are there certain things I have to look for? Also can anyone recommend a tranny swapping guide ( have done swap w/o engine never with engine in) .

if it is a 4.0 i will bolt up. that is it...to much computer crap for the 98 trans. 3.0trans wont fit
