hey everyone, this is my winter beater so im probably not goint to do any major repairs to it but i figured id bounce this off a few heads first. this truck has a lot of issues, doesnt stay in first gear, have to double clutch / speed shift goign in 2nd, 5th gear howls. often it wont go into 2nd gear and when it does that it has a hard time goign into ANY gear except reverse. also it doesnt like to go into first at a stop.

heres what bothers me: come to a stop in 1st gear and it keeps wanting to chug ahead like the clutch is only half pushed and then engine will want to die, yank it out of 1st and the engine idles nicely. once you do that it will go in and out of any fear no problem. anyone have this happen before? ONLY chugges a head in 1st gear, have not been able to get it to do it in any other gear, havnt tried reverse though.

^^^^^ biggest concern^^^^^

flushed and bled clutch (bell housing area dry around inspection hole), and checked trans fluid, topped with 80-90. no difference. would flushing the trans help anything?

The bearing/slave cylinder might be bad especially if it is original.

sounds like a problem in the clutch hydraulics... at least part of your problem anyways

its chugging even with the clutch depressed because the clutch is still partially engaged. You need a new clutch slave. You have to pull the tranny to change it, so you might as well find another tranny from the junkyard or something because yours is FUBAR'd. Changing the oil isnt going to do much.

would a 5spd trans out of an 89 b2 fit without modifications? iv got one in the backyard waiting to be pulled.

It won't fit. Bell pattern is wrong.

Also, 80-90 is the wrong fluid for that trans. It takes ATF.

But yeah, your clutch hydraulics are going. Sounds like you may be loosing syncros too, but it's hard to tell with your apparent hydraulic issues. I'd start with a slave and a clutch (if it wasn't done recently). With a truck that old, I'd advise putting a clutch master on too, since a new slave and clutch may make the bottom of the chain stiff enough to blow a seal out of an old master.

I would check your clutch pedal pivot bracket for an elongated hole. Have a 96 Ranger that was bad and made it hard to shift into 1st and 2nd. There's some of the pic's somewhere on this site that you can look at

then i guess im going to start with the inspection of the pedel however i dont feel any play, and a slave. im trying to put in the least amount of money possible. this was a free truck todrvie in the winter. my other rides a GM :yahoo:

little bit of an update. looks like im giong to search for a used trans. the past two days iv had the trans bind up in reverse. literally felt like someone slammed on the ebrake. not to mention 4th gear is the ONLY gear with no issue. i did have my father apply the clutch while i looked through the inspeciton hole and the slave never wrongfully returned while the clutch was applied. even after holding for a minute or stabbing the clutch and then holding.

SOOOO. anyone have a used trans laying around? APB please

Look in front of your clutch pedal, thats where the clutch master cylinder is. It could be leaking there, and would be by far the easiest part of the clutch system to change. O'Reilly's store brand master is the same part as the original Ford part, at least on my truck and a few others I've seen.

Actually, replacing the master "now" might not be a bad idea, its only about $50 and narrows down the problem, and with 200k it would be a good idea to do it as part of a clutch overhaul anyways.

ill check, however the bulkheads dry and the carpets still dry and dusty. oh and can a 4x2 trans be converted to fitting a transfer-case? i just dont know fords enough to know.

The ouput shafts and extension housings on both manual and auto trannies are different for 4wd, you will have to tear down the trans completely to swap these parts in.

so just to clarify you cant just unbolt the extension housing and bolt a transfer case in its place?
