Hey all
I just recently Joined the Ranger club with a standard 1988 2.9L V6 Ford Ranger. Shes runs pretty sweet except occasionally Ill be driving and the Oil light will start to flicker and then turn on and soon after that there will be a sudden loss of power and a knocking sound in the engine compartment. Its happend about 4 times and in those 4 times the power steering has gone twice. The really werid thing is the truck will do all this then magically the next second the oil light will go off and the truck will be fine. I've checked all the fluids except the Power steer (keep forgetting to check it when its cold) And everything seems fine. The only other problem I have had with it is the Heater core went the other day (but I don't think that's relevant and is an easy fix). So any ideas would be great
Thanks

Sounds like you need a new oil pump. Or check your oil pressure sending unit.

It sounds like an intermittent clog. Put a can of Seafoam in the oil, run it as long as the can says, drain oil, replace the oil filter. Might even pull the oilpan, clean the oilpump pickup and go from there. Frankly, if you pull the pan, how much is a new oil pump?

I wouldn't wait around to get this figured out. It sounds like you have a REAL oil low pressure problem. Ignoring that will seize your engine (probably gall the crank bearings first = fatal).

Its been two weeks and I haven't had an problems, but I know its probably just waiting for me to really need it. Um is there an alternative for Sea Foam I live In BC and I don't think we got it out here yet. Though I'll check tomorrow if I can.
Cheers

+1 i would drop the pan and change the filter clean everything as best you can it might be a flake or rust from the pan or something if the pain is REAL bad you might consider changing it
