Here's a good one. Engine (Or trans) is experiencing what seems to be a miss or stumble at RPMS below 2K, generally during acceleration.

It's a 2002 Ranger Edge 3.0, 90K miles. Aside from a K&N (in box) filter, there are no modifications. Both MAF sensor and ICV have been checked and cleaned, both are spotless. All new Iridium plugs. Oil was changed 500 miles ago, Lucas 10-30w with Lucas additive. Cooling system was flushed with and new thermostat and rad cap were installed. Showing no check engine light. Trans fluid is clean and full.

My next thought is the fuel filter, which appears to be factory original. It should be noted that for about the last month and a half, this car has rarely had more than a quarter tank but has been driven constantly, getting about $30 in gas every few days. A project that required me to drop the tank has been looming and I kept the tank low for just this reason.

So the problem is this, there is a hesitation that occurs under light engine load, usually around 1500RPM and generally not right from a standstill, but a few seconds after, seems after it hits 2nd. The RPMs will drop and the car with hesitate and stumble but a stab of the gas pedal will always power through it. Almost never happens on the freeway and generally more when the car is colder, although its pretty constant. It feels like a surge from the engine and a drag from the transmission, if this makes any sense, almost like the computer is hunting around for the right air/fuel ratio.

Car runs fine otherwise...I mean, besides the chaos above. It idles fine and its butter smooth all the way up to high RPMs, in park the engine is flawless to 3000 RPM when the computer kicks the rev limiter on, which works perfectly.

I'm at a loss. I'm obviously going to replace the fuel filter regardless, but I doubt whether that would cause this. Any insight appreciated.

doesn't sound like you've done much actual diagnosing.

sounds like bad plug wires or a bad coil to me

Disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR valve and drive it.

If it goes away, (regardless of CEL coming on) replace the DPFE.

Either way. It's a short duration test and it may not even light the Check Engine Light.
