k so i have the 91 3.0 liter ranger... I was having low power issues And large amount of blue smoke. So I took it that the cat was shot and proceeded to Remove the innards of the cat. Used a hammer and a fence post. I went through them both. Now when i start it, it idles just fine, but with any throttle input it spits and sputters and backfires. NONE of these where prior symptoms. I did however get rid of the blue smoke. What could be the issue?? Could i have busted the O2 sensor when i punched through? Any Ideas are a great help, I bought the truck to drive not work on all the time.. and it has been that way.
HELP?? Please?

Blue smoke indicates oil burning, not a bad cat. You probably destroyed a perfectly good cat. And even if it was bad, the proper fix is a new cat, not punching out the insides of the old one.

ok.. im in indiana emissions dont matter for squat.. and i am lost im ready to sell it..

Doesn't matter what state you live in, what you did is a Federal crime!!! up to $20000 fine!!! Why didn't you see how it ran with the converter off, before you gutted it? Or replace it with a some exhaust pipe? I agree with you.....you should stop working on your truck....ask for help before you start guessing, and ripping things apart. You are just wasting your time & money.

You probably have shot rings and/or valve seals. You are burning oil.

What color and condition was your catalyst material? Was it dry and light, like grey charcoal, or was it wet and black? It may have been oil soaked and that is why you aren't getting blue smoke anymore.

As for your backfiring issues, you may have damaged on O2 sensor. You may also have removed enough back-pressure from the system to allow another issue related to engine wear to show through. Like a slightly burnt or sticky valve.

The stuff from the rear cat was light brown.. not grey.. the front was almost black. It pretty much turned to dusty with 1 hit each, no resistance when i hit it with a hammer..
i did just do this to be stupid it was recomended to me bye 3 or 4 people, 2 of which were previous mechanics.. my smoking is gone.. no smoke not even white smoke..
the only other thing i can add is that it revs fine when i have it on ramps in the garage, nose up. but i put it down then it starts to run crappy, could it be a clogged fuel filter??

Just when you think there is hope for the world.....

whoa!!!! its a federal crime to de gut your cats?! even in states like south dakota where you can run open headers and run with no cats as long as it isnt past the disturbing the peace time?

So what do i do??? i got the truck cheap.. should i try to sell it for what i got imn it??

Stop listening to people who are telling you to destroy parts of the emissions system, for openers.

Start with the obvious. Do a tune-up, do the filters, all of them, change the oil. May as well do the O2 sensors, if you suspect you've damaged it/them. Throw a bottle or two of Chevron Techron in the gas tank and fill with FRESH fuel. Add some Lucas to the oil when you change and see if your oil consumption goes down. While you have the plugs out, do a compression test and see how that looks.

That's a good place to start.

Yes, absolutely, regardless of where you live in the US.

Well, since it runs ok nose up, but not level I'd guess that fuel delivery is not an issue since the fuel would be traveling up hill. New fuel filters are never a bad idea though.

Check timing, check fuel pressure.

okay guys.. yes its a federal crime.. the state you are in does NOT matter.. but whatever... i mean if they dont check emissions they don't know.. but anyways..

do a compression test first.. see what you come up with. probably valve seals. i hate those things.. they go out way to much
