Cracked head?

Now that's funny!

losing coolent and cannot find the source

Warren! All five of my daughters are laughing their asses off over your post! Not ONE of them would DARE to make such a post!
So! You have an engine bay of about 4 feet by four feet.. There is some GREEN stuff in there and you can't, in that confined space, find where it is coming from?
How much time have you spent looking? All of twenty seconds?
Get your ass out there with a flashlight and FIND THE DAMN LEAK! Crawl your ass UNDER the truck with that light and FIND IT!
So you thought by making that post someone on here would DRIVE over to your house and say " well HERE it is right here!"

normally your a great help but you seem to be an a$$ on occasion im sorry to make a post that well to you may be stupid but the coolent isnt showing up anywhere and i was thinking internal i should have made it more clear where are these motors prone to leaking internally its not in the oil and not going through the cylinders and out the exhaust

I don't know if your 86 has the same coolant resevoir as my 87 but mine is vented on the side facing the engine. I had to add coolant a few times last summer and I couldn't figure out where it was going. Finally I realized mine was sloshing out of the resevoir going down my lane due to the huge potholes we have. If you drive over rough roads it might be something to check. Just a thought.

If the head(s) is cracked, coolant is likely to leak internally only. You may have a whitish goo buildup on the inside of your oil filler cap on the valve covers. You maight also notice excessive white smoke from the exhaust, and if really bad, a sweet smell to the exhaust.

However, when the crack is small, you will probably notice nothing but missing coolant.
There are a LOT of 2.9L engines out there with cracked heads.

BigJim - I hope none of your daughters is/becomes a mechanic and works on my BII!!!! ;)

DAMN BIG JIM, I THOUGHT THIS FORUM WAS FOR HELPING PEOPLE NOT INSULTING THEM! If you can help someone who is asking for help then do that, dont insult them by saying that your daughters are laughing at him. You use to be helpfull and give good advice (you have even helped me a few times by just reading other peoples posts) BUTT recently most of your replies have been insulting and rude. Warren 86 how much coolant are you losing (are you adding daily), do you have a puddle or is it just disappearing (what CraigK is saying about cracked head/s). The water pump has a small hole under the pully that is designed to leak when the bearing/seal is going bad, also you might want to check your heater core. Good luck.

Howdy Warren

First you say you can't find the source and now you say: " its not in the oil and not going through the cylinders and out the exhaust" If not there then it is most likely dripping outside somewhere in the engine bay. If it is in the engine bay... any one of my daughters could find it..
Personally I wouldn't take that being said to me! I'd get my ass out there and find just where that coolant WAS going.
Then I'd get on here and tell you I was at least as good as one of your daughters!
All joking aside Warren. MOST leaks are findable. Sometimes it takes getting under the vehicle with a flashlight to find that ONE DROP of coolant.
I found one two weeks ago on a 2 year old Ford diesel. He was in the boonies with a hot engine..

Damn Jim! Be nice :D the last part of your message is right on point, just leave the first part out (dont be personal, be helpful) "joking" and a little criticism is cool just dont be insulting.

Having not been there when you checked. Pull the plugs and make sure there are no coolent deposits.
