i have knock.......it sounds like i have something rolling around inside..... its a 2.9 with 177,000 miles on it, yesterday i had the check oil light on, i put a quart in and it seemed to be be fine.any ideas?

We need more info. loud knock, soft knock, heavy metal or just a small clanking, does it do it all the time, or when the engine is cold, does it have oil pressure? on a manual gauge? Is it missing or hitting on all 6? Cked the plugs? Was it low on oil? if so, how much?

it was a quart low, its a decent clunking and does it at idel at times or when reved enough to shift. it only does it sometimes. it has normal oil pressure. the noise is comeing from the left side valve cover, but i have yet to take a look.it has been running fine the 3 1/2 weeks ive had it

guessing......rod bearing..sounds like a rebuild to me..go buy a engine stethoscope, it will help pin point the knock...they are less than $10.00

I do know that these 2.9's are plagued with lifter ticking. I have it show up once in a blue moon but it disappears for weeks or months so I just leave it be. It could be oil not getting up to the lifters fast enough to keep them "cool"

well if thats the case ill just swap a 2.9 in and slowly rebuild this one as a spare

my 2.3 in my project truck ticks as well as my 2.9, now it sounds like a skateboard bearing in a coke can when it runs.

These engines oil pump has a screen on the pickup. If a history of late oil changes has got you, then the screen clogs up, oil can't get to the bearings..well..you know the rest...usually rod bearings first...

i knew it was only a metter of time before this motor died

get a can of CD-2 from autozone, its for sticking lifters...it will help if it is a lifter..

lol yeah I already have money saved to put a rebuilt 4.0 in just in case my 2.9 poops out on me.

EDIT: This CD-2 stuff is an additive to the oil? I might grab me some as well
