Can you replace a manual transmission in a 1997 two-wheel drive 2.3 l with a auto transmission out of 97 ranger

Yes... but its not a simple switcharoo. You will need an ECM from a 95-97 2.3 automatic, the transmission itself must be from a 2.3 as well, wiring harness, new ring gear, new starter, new driveshaft, all the column parts for the shifter, and some other odds and ends I'm forgetting.

Plus your rear end gearing might not be ideal for an automatic. (Automatics usually got lower gearing)
