I've got a 94 Ford ranger 3.0 with a cracked head and I was wondering if I i could use the engine out of a 98 areostar van to replace it i know the heads are the same and I could just use the heads but I'd just rather use the whole engine if I can. My ranger has a distributor wile the van but is distributerless

Yes, you can.

You will need to install your distributor/TFI system on to the '98 engine.
Your '94 computer can't run distributorless system.
And your '94 wiring can't use '98 computer, easily

Good read here on changes to the 3.0l Vulcan engine from 1986 to 2008: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/3_0-build.shtml

Flex fuel or gas only doesn't matter, because you will also move upper and lower intake from '94 over to the '98 engine, so wiring and injectors match up.

Replace rear main seal while engine is out.
You may have to swap oil pans and pickup tube.
I think '98 crank pulley will line up with '94 accessories, but check that
