Ok short and sweet I just bought a 1986 Ranger 4X2 2.9 with a A4LD trans. I drove it to get somthing to eat and reverse was slow to engage. So no worries I just put where I need to back up (LOL). When I got home and took my foot off the gas it acted like it went into neutral, the hit the gas and it took off. Please tell me what to do I have been reading so much stuff don't know where to begin. and not a lot of money

yes fluid is full and some what clean I think its been changed. and when you slow down the truck lunges I'm not sure why and when it is warm the truck will hardly back up. If I where to put a trans in this truck what can I put thats a better trans

Ok Update

Can someone tell me something see I have been working on cars/trucks a long time but automatic transmissions confuse me. Ok so I checked my fluid one more time to make sure I was doing it right and is over full, like 1" to an 1" and a half. Now because of that if I do a trans service on it and put the correct amount of fluid in will it shift correctly or not. I see alot of people looking but many people talking I know I am new to this site and have never done this, But any kind of guidance would help. Thanks for looking hope someone can help

Trans fluid usually needs to be checked with fluid warm, engine on, trans in park or idling. If you did all that, then maybe the transmission filter is blocked. Problem is, what is it blocked with. Could be the clutches are worn out. I would drop the pan and change the filter.

While you're in there, you might want to consider this:

Edited to add. Forget that link. It's for a 4R70W, not the A4LD. I don't think that mod will work for your transmission. Sorry for any confusion.
