i have an 86 ford ranger with the 2.9 in it and i am trying to replace the valve guild and i can not break the the valve spring and the valves apart. i have a air peace the goes in the spark plug hole and i have had 130psi in the cylenders and all it does is release the pressure. i have also tried to put nylon rope in the cylinder and it still lets the valve open. and help tips or trick would greatly be appriciated.

thanks for the help

WOW, with 130 psi I would think that would be enough. However since that is not the case here lets see what can be done. Now you said that it would release the pressure. Is it "releasing" the pressure after you relieve the spring pressure? or is doing it with spring pressure applied? If it holds pressure until the spring pressure is relieved then it sounds like the valve locks are sticking to the spring retainer. Have you tried to gently tap on the spring retainers with a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer? If not give it a try and it should help to release them. If you engine is relieving air pressure with valve spring pressure applied then you have other issues and most likely will require a rebuild. Now, you also said that you were looking at replacing the valve guide, not sure how you really plan on doing that with the cylinder head still on the truck. You can replace the valve stem seals but a guide would mean you'd have to remove the head. Hope this helps some and good luck with your project.
