well the gears went in my 7.5 like butter but the d28 3rd member with lunchbox locker is kicking our butt-the tech doing this install is very good and has a great attitude but we need some help-a little backround, bought used 4.56 gears off here from a guy that said he had 4.56 gears for 28/7.5 and the fronts were in a 3rd member and came with a "DETROIT" locker-well the rears were fine and he had them in in like an hour and a half and he started on the fronts ,he put a helper to work cleaning the case etc. and the helper tells him its full of SAND! sure enough its got lots of a sand like substance in it and so he takes it apart and the locker ,which I now believe to be a lock right or something like it ,and there really are few parts to this thing, has sand everywhere-any ideas or suggestions would be helpful-this is being done at a full service shop so if this goes well my 2 runnin buddies will get locked and geared also as they are "B" level techs and need the Lead Tech to be comfortable enough with these lock right things to back them up. THANKS AS ALWAYS!

for my money and if the gears aren't scored real bad from the sand, i'd just put the gears in the front without that locker. steering and handling will be better on the road and easier to turn on tight trails off road. spend a little more and get a new or "really good" used locker for the rear. i got my Detroit used and in excellent condition for like $250. a steal really. rear locker will be much better on the road and still give you tons more traction off road. just my $.02

A lunchbox locker is hard to destroy, even with sand, as the only wear parts are the actual gear teeth that the drive gear and the spur gear it contacts with. I'd thoroughly clean everything, then do a complete inspection...I think it should be okay, but I definitely would go with all new bearings and seals, as sand will eat them up quickly...

had to pass on locker for now

The tech tried but don't know what he tried as we got busy and before I knew it the truck was back together and outside-I must say I am happy as heck with the finished product as it pulls away from lights without riding the clutch and it is quite(using used gears was risky) too. I took it out to a mud hole near the shop tonight and it did great and 4Lo works better too. :yahoo:
