Could anybody please tell me what fuse 17 is for under hood of 2004 Ford Ranger...it reads that it is for the ABS brake motor, 40 amp fuse

I did post this here under Brakes yesterday but nobody responded, assumed they did not know? 31 folks viewed it but nobody responded

This is a safety issue, so I took a chance at trying it here

I want to make sure the ABS is disabled.

I did search much before asking this question, I found I poster here in previous thread that felt pulling this fuse was all that was required to disable ABS, but I thought it was perhaps still trying to come on, perhaps my imagination? Wondered if it was possible for ABS to come on with 40 amp abs motor fuse pulled

I was not interested in other ways of disabling the ABS , was just wanting to confirm that pulling #17 fuse under hood was enough

I would have thought it was a straightforward question, but have not been able to have this question answered, and this is my 2nd Ranger forum

Perhaps its my personality :)

If nobody here knows I will have to phone a Ford dealer, maybe the parts guy knows, but I thought thats what you guys were for:beer:

Yep I think it must be my personality, 2nd forum that would not/could not answer my question

Thanks anyway :):bawling:

will call a Ford dealer parts guy, maybe he can shout to mechanic something like this...Hey Charlie, guy wants to know if he pulls the 40 amp fuse under hood of Ford Ranger 2004 4x4, the one marked ABS motor, will that 100 % disable the ABS brakes

Will try it and post back in case another guy wants to know this in future perhaps:icon_thumby:

Hey! First off, I am NOT A TECH! However I did find a post on another forum that indicates interrupting the 20 ga wire from fuse #20 in the small junction box would disable the ABS. I will attempt to post a link to it, bit don't hold your breath...

It's a red wire according to the referenced post.

I also want to say that you are responsible for any modifications to your vehicle. I personally do not recommend disabling the ABS.

However, I found another post elsewhere that said for some models removing the ABS fuse in the cab will keep key power from activating the ABS. The ABS light should come on and stay on while the fuse is out to remind you to put it back in when you get back to an improved surface.

Again, I am not a technician and I do not recommend disabling the ABS.

Hey thanks very much for your response, much appreciated

I called 2 Ford dealers, my closest and another one, spoke 2 parts guys in both they said they did not know, never offered to ask a mechanic, but now I am about to call Ford 800 number see if they know

thanks for responding...when you said fuse in cab, I assume you mean NOT under the hood, yes am familiar with fuse inside cab, that also controls lights in rear and a few other important issues

I am going to find out the answer one way or another just in regards to fuse 17 under hood, 40 amp ABS motor:icon_cheers::icon_cheers::icon_cheers:

I'm guessing the ABS is integrated with other important systems to discourage people from doing what you're trying to do. I understand why you're trying to do it, don't get me wrong, but it may be a highly involved scheme by Ford engineers to cover their butts. Seems like you ought to be able to put a switch to interrupt the power going to the ABS without removing the fuse. Maybe a switch that lights up when the circuit is interrupted for off road, placed where you cannot overlook it when you get back to pavement.

Thanks for your input, Called ford 800 number, real nice lady took down my info, said she is taking my question directly to a Ford Technician and will have my answer within 2 days

I will post the answer I get here, provided thread is still up

Thanks

UPDATE

Got a call back from Ford. girl talked to Technician but simply said it`s not a answer that they can give out for legal reasons I paraphrase

But at any rate have been driving with the 40 amp ABS motor fuse out for several days now and clearly the ABS is disabled.

Only reason I asked was because I thought once it was trying to come on even after fuse pulled, but am sure now was just my imagination

I got the straightforward answer here originally at this forum in a older thread, guy stated to another fellow that was all it took to simply pull the 40 amp ABS fuse under hood, no need to pull sensors or anything else.

So I see now that he was right

i hate to be an ethug but wow.. im new to this whole off road world (i know your not off roading when this is happeing) but when you try to stop going down a huge hill covered in sand, gravel, or snow while offroading.. you dont want to have ABS on or you will just "roll" to the bottom faster then if you where to slide by locking the breaks, this is very dangerouse belive it or not. now since we dont need to give an explination of what ABS is or dose.. lets get right to answering your question since Me, just like you dont like ABS on sertain kinds of terain.. what you need to do is pop your hood and pull the number 17 fuse from your fuse box, dont pull the one in the cab it will shut all other shit off, the one under the hood is just the ABS motor.. now im not 100% sure if its fuse number 17 im going off of memory.. check your owners manual and pull the fuse in the engine compartment thats labeled "ABS Motor" and whala no more abs.. hope that helps buddy

That worked for me! Ever since i bought my ranger 3 months ago the abs buzzes ever time i am about to come to a complete stop and it is very sketchy and dangerous when driving in congested traffic. I pulled number 17 under the hood and now it disabled the abs until i get my wheel sensor replaced.
