I need help...I feel stupid for asking this but not the best when it comes to 4x4 systems. Anyhow I have a '87 2.9 trying to remove case the driveshaft that goes into case can I just pull out yoke from case or do I need to remove the four small bolts? And do you happen to know the size of socket i'm going to need to buy 1/4 fit on it but as soon as I put torque on it it sliped so I figured it's metric? Does this go for both sides 'cause they look the same.

Thanks for the help!!

You have to remove the 4 bolts & then the u joint & the caps will pull out of the yoke along with the drive shaft, the yoke itself will stay attached to the transfer case.

Don't feel stupid, there are many ways of learning & asking is one of them. I have done it a thousand times & still can't remember the size wrench that fits it, I know its metric though. I am thinking 8mm for some reason but I could be wrong? :dunno:

I do know (at least in my case) it is easier to use a wrench than it is a socket but you will more than likely have to use another wrench or a small pipe for leverage.

By saying both sides, are you referring to where the rear shaft bolts to the rear axle? If so, the bolts are also metric, thinking 12mm or 14mm but I can't remember for sure. Like I say, as many times as I have done it, you think I would remember. :dunno:

i am 95% sure you are correct. 8mm for the stock front bolts and 12mm for the rear. I KNOW the rear ones are 12mm but I have been running drilled out yokes and grade 8 nuts and bolts so long I dont even remember what the front is!

86

Thanks guys, I already got the rear. My first instinct was to pull the shaft out like you would on a 2wd truck but i was short on time and couldn't tinker with it.

i agree with B2 and 86. im pretty shure its a 8MM

8mm and 5/16" will both work, you will want to take a small torch (propane or butane will work) and heat up the part the bolts thread into a little to loosten the loctite, give the wrench a tap with a hammer and they should come right out

you have that transfer case in a '87? that's a 1354 out of something a lot newer... if it was the original T case it would have the slip joint in the T case and wouldn't have that dual cardan shaft...

Well it is a '87 and it used to be my moms and she is the second owner, but it's a STX highrider mybe they got a better case...dunno i'll get some better pics once its out.

if you have an '87 and that type of front output on the T-case you have
either a VERY LATE 1987 STX-Highrider

OR you got the NVH retrofit ("Silent recall" theyd fix it for free IF you complained but otherwise wouldn't tell anyone about the program) which consisted of the front driveshaft and T-case in your picture.

Unlike the later 13-54 T-case with the double cardan joint your
front driveshaft bolts are not 8mm-5/16 12-point heads.

this bolts are smaller in diameter and have smaller heads
It's been a while, but I have one or two of those unique
(long obsoleted) bolts but I'm pretty sure they were 1/4"
12-point heads, but they might also be 6mm

proceeded with caution...

1/4 inch was to big 5/16th to small But 1/4 was close so i'm guessing 8mm...I'll drive out to it today once it quits raining and the sun comes out and see what fits and un-mont from tranny. It also has a t-case skid plate which i've never seen before on a OEM truck... atleast my '86 didn't have one.

If it were the front output it would be a slip joint, but unless my eyes deceive me, we are looking at the rear output, in which case it would indeed be the double cardan shaft which uses 8mm bolts. I am admittedly not familiar with the 1354 case, but from the pics, it looks like the 1350 in my 84.

All of the 4x4 1st gens I have owned have had a t-case skid plate.

WHOOPS, JUST SEEN THE UPDATED POST WITH MORE PICS.

You are using a 12 point wrench right?
