Help with a Volvo axle

Well my mom has a 740 wagon.
The problems is the diff lost it oil it looks like form a lose diff cover.
There was lots of small flakes in the oil that was left.
Well now after it cleaned and filled back up it makes a really loud growl.
Should i be looking for a new diff or can it be fixed with some new bearings?

How did the ring and pinion look? I'd bet they are toast as well.

Metal doesn't just appear in differentials......... it has to be coming from somewhere and that is the question.... where? did you look around while you were replacing the gasket?

I looked around I did not see were it came, I guess the bearings.
The magnet had hardly any metal on it, it was just brass colored in the oil I saw.
I manual turned the axle by hand I could not feel any roughness or hear any noise.

I don't know a lot about axles. So I don't know what really looking beyond roughtness and play.
