i have an 86 ranger that had a 2.9 in it and i put a 302 out of a 1988 mustang with that wiring harness and i cant get any wiring help does aanyone one how to wire it up or am i just on my own

What are you wiring, EFI, distributor, altenator? What? A little more info would be helpful.

if youve never done anyhting like this, youre in for some fun. its kinda hard to really draw it out, but youll have to cut the plugs(grey, black) and hard wire them into the truck. mainly hot,key on hots, grounds, etc. then youll have to address the issue of fuel pump wiring since your probably carburated now. if your truck was fuel injected it wouldnt be as bad. its been awhile since i did mine,so id have to go back and dig up all the stuff i traced and diagramed out

my truck was fuel injected i was planning on just splicing the 5.0 harness into where the 2.9 harness plugged into just before it went into the cab on the drivers side do you think that would work? i was wondering if anyone had the diagram of the connecters that labeled which wire was wut for my 86 4x4 ranger 2.9 i cant find it on the internet anywhere

What I would do, First cut open the 2.9 harness and keep the things that you don't need to change; alternator, temp sensor, oil pressure sensor. Second cut open the 5.0 harness and remove those things from it. You will be left with only a few wires that need to be spliced.
wiring diagrams for both are a huge advantage, if not a must.

yep, youre not really gonna find anything laid out for you like you want to find. youll have to get both diagrams for each vehicle, trace wires for days, make your head hurt alot, and get to know each wire and its function, and figure out where each go. like he said, find the crap you dont need first and shitcan it to make it simpler.just be very sure what goes where before you turn the key or you could fry an ecu or worse

well does anyone have the connecter views for the 2.9 wiring harness

you need to trace each wire to find out where it goes, then find it in a vehicle diagram and backtrace it to see where it goes from there, then cross refernce the truck harness and figure out how to put them together. for instance,u pick a wire in the stang harness at the plug, find it in the diagram, trace it to the end ,and it ends up being a temp sensor wire for the coolant. now go in the truck diagram and trace its temp wire back to where the harness is supposed to plug in. find that wire and connect it with the one you had in the stang harness. get it?

First, you go to www.helminc.com and purchase the OEM wiring diagram for your conversion ('86 Ranger). When you have the proper wiring diagrams in hand most of your questions will be answered by studying them at the dining room table. The Ranger wiring diagram will cost you $12. I don't see the Mustang diagram at Helm. Search eBay and Google, "wiring diagrams"
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors... is a listing for an '88 Ford Car Wiring and Vacuum Diagram Mustang Taurus for $19 w/$8 shipping.
I can print you off diagrams for both from Mitchell Diagnostics, but be advised I've found flaws in their diagrams before. The wires usually go to the right places, but the most common flaw I've encountered is in color-coding. And, a lack of some circuit #'s, wire gage size - little things that help. If you send me the envelope and postage, I'd be happy to mail 'em to you. Hey, the price ain't so bad, and I was able to sort my way though them.
Don't get overwhelmed with it. Study one circuit at a time, wire it, and methodically move to the next circuit. It is a task that may take considerable time, but its not daunting. I did it - and, even made my own engine wiring harness using two harness's, the correct color-coded wires, cutting, splicing, soldering, and heatshrinking to my hearts desire. All I have to do now, is loom it.

OR, Do what Bruce says in the next post.
YOU NEED THE DIAGRAMS!!

Go to Auto Zone online and you can get wiring diagrams for free, you will have to print them off. I got my wiring diagrams from a friend who has ALLdata.

yeh i got diagrams off all data but i was just wondering if someone new a step by step guess ill do it the hard way

Zerocool, if it was an easy conversion there wouldn't be so many carbed v-8 Rangers. I'm going through the same process with my truck now. Pretty good advice from the previous post but I'll add one more. Make sure to mark everything and route it through the compartment before you solder anything together. I'm zip tying my ends together as I go. Make sure to tin the ends of your splices before soldering them and use good heat shrink. If you plan on hitting any water crossings or mud you may want to fill the heat shrink with some silcone at the connections before putting the heat to it also. Some of your sensor readings for the ECU are voltage sensitive and corrosion will throw these off. Take your time, be methodical with it and the time takin will be less than hunting down problems later. Study up on your map reading skills, good luck

ALLDATA is the only diagrams that i used for mine. Lots of info in alldata. And i HIGHLY suggest buying the expensive heatshrink tubing. The "weatherproof" stuff thats got an inner liner of hot glue stuff. For the extra money you will be happy for it later.

Whats the status of your swap ZeroCool?

Doing the same one, cannot get fuel pump to come back on, even though I have the right (+12v) wire going to it. Comes from Relay > Inertia & EEC > Fuel Pump
