Last night while driving up a slight incline my 2002 ranger (3.0L auto 2wd) went to down shift but instead sliped out of gear. I pulled over on the side of the road, parked it and then put it back into drive but it wouldnt go. I shifted it into second gear and it works fine (drove it home like that). The over drive light never came on. I went out to look at it this morning and found reverse dosnt work either. I checked the fluid and all is well from what can tell.

I went out and fooled with the truck some more. ATF level looks great. I can move the truck in both reverse and drive but to do so I have to rev the engine up and the truck barley moves. The o/d light begian to blinke while doing that. I tried scanning the truck with my craftsman scan tool, It read P1336 crankshaft/camshaft sensor range/performance. Would this code affect my transmission?

If you get this code, the first thing to check is your distributor especially if you have an imported vehicle. Look for signs of oil in the distributor which can contaminate the signals being monitored by the ecm (engine computer).Check also the wiring leading to the distributor and see if the wires are properly insulated away from hot exhaust which could burn the wires. Do these checks also on the crank sensor itself whether it is located in the front of the engine or at the flywheel at the rear of the engine. Ditto for the cam sensor
P1336 = Crankshaft Position Or Camshaft Position Input Signal To Powertrain Control Module Concerns
if not properly align and synchronize with the crank sensor. On some applications (like Ford), an alignment tool is required which is can be bought from your local parts store (cost about $31). If you install the distributor without proper timing, it will still run but the mileage will suffer and the above code showing up.

P1336 obd2 code must be checked at the crank sensor circuit and see if it is synchronized with the cam sensor

Did you try to reprogram your computer by 15 min disconnect and reconnect

With No forward and reverse in drive the problem with the trans is NOT electrical. some scan tools wont display trans codes. You will probably have a code P0731 no first gear. The cause can range from valve body or gasket blowout to a broken front/overdrive one-way clutch in the trans

since I can put it into gear and it knows what gear its is (reverse it tries to back up) and it takes me stepin on the gas to get it to move i will assume the clutch is slipping. if thats possible in an automatic, im not to familiar with transmissions.

I recommend you go see a mechanic tranny shop for the problem. I think you're going to need repair Intern gear setting

I have already had problem before on a mazda. I had broken tooth the speed by changing gear --> 2 -> 1 and D

WHAT?!?!? That response makes little to no sense. First of all, its a 2002. No Ranger has had a distributor since 1992. Second, how does oil get into the dis on a ford? That is a long trip through some solid stuff.

Your P1336 code is related to electrical noise on the CKP circuit. Check the resistance between cam sensor harness's heat shield and the battery negative cable. Should be less than 5 ohms.

I do agree wit STX though. This sounds like one that needs to be taken to a shop and looked over by a pro.

Thanks adsm08. I knew that wasnt right, Ive read that on another site, I assume he copied and pasted it on here. I do appreciate people trying to help tho.

I will look into what you said about the camshaft sensor.

I guess the one thing that confuses me the most is that first and second gear work perfect when I select them manually, but drive and reverse act up. Could this be a valve not working properlly? Since drive starts out in first gear, and my first gear works fine Im lead to belive its not the gears. Does "drive" first and "manual" first use diffrent valves?

You likely have a hydraulic issue. I am by no means an auto trans specialist, but I have been through a few and have taken Ford's auto trans classes.

Drive 1st gear and manual 1st gear do use somewhat different hydraulic paths since you get engine braking in manual 1st, but not in D1.

So I removed the valve body and discovered a few spools in the body dont move very freely, shouldnt they all get pushed back out by springs? I pulled one out that was hard to push in or out. The spool had scracthes all the way around it like it had been rubbing on the body, obviously thats a problem.

Should a rebuild kit for the valve body be easy to find?
