We just recently replaced the clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder on my 99 2.5l and it still slips. It only does it when it's in the 50's or below outside. After driding for a couple minutes it will warm up and stop. Now this may not help the issue but I just recently put 31's on my ranger. But it was doing the same thing before with 235's not as bad but still. We are stumped other than the thought something may be loose? Anyone had this problem/experience?

Also could the engine be surging? I can't tell it is on the cluster just a thought lol

Could be the flywheel is glazed or worn under spec.

We checked the flywheel while we were putting the clutch on and it didn't seem bad at all for 209,000 mi. It had just the slightest bit of wear and I couldn't see that it was glazed over.

what brand of clutch did you use? and have you broken it in yet?

Temperature sensitivity could mean that the master & slave cylinders are hanging up a bit, causing the clutch to be partially released. If the wrong fluid were used, or the pistons tight in their bores or Frosted Flakes were used as sealer or ??? ... you could have problems that way.
If it will grab well, and hold, then it is not a physical problem as much as a 'linkage' problem would be my thoughts.
A test that was used to indicate a slipping clutch back 40 years ago was to put the transmission in 4th(was 3rd back when, so Direct Drive is a more exact) and while traveling ~45-50, floor the gas pedal. If the clutch disk and pressure plate were slipping, rpms would increase without vehicle speed increasing. If the clutch did not slip then, it was working properly .

The current version of Ron's test is to block the front wheels, put the trans in 4th gear and see how far the pedal comes out before the engine RPM is effected. Of course it helps to have a tach for that.
