I was driving my 92 ranger (4.0 5-speed) hit a bump at about 65 and it completely died. I thought it was the emergency fuel shut off... no. Fuel system is fine, and still have GREAT spark... It "turns over" but doesnt sound like it is fully turning over, like something is missing... ANY suggestions???:dunno:

Sounds like part of the engine is turning but not all? I shudder to think of it but the timing chain makes sure everything is turning together. Of course I have no idea what yours sounds like, but the abrupt stop followed by the "partial" turning over with spark but no start...that bump may have been coincidental.

Just taking a stab at it. More knowledgeable heads are certainly lurking around here somewhere.

That's exactly what it sounds like, something just isnt there. That's what I was thinking, is it possible it jumped? Or snapped completely?? How do I check?

1992 is old enough to have a distributor cap and rotor, yes? Remove the distributor cap and have someone crank the engine. If the rotor does not turn, you may have a broken/non functioning timing chain. Youtube has a couple videos on it.

If you have spark then the rotor would have to be turning.

That is true...do you mean spark at the plugs or just battery power?

I don't think its a distributor and rotor, I think it's an ignition coil... Its the black box on the top left side of the engine near the firewall... Is there another way to check it??

I don't think there is a 4.0 with a distributor, my 91 certainly does not have one.

Are you checking spark with a timing light? Take a long screwdriver and listen to the injectors and see if they are firing just put your ear up to the handle and set the tip on the injector while cranking the motor. It just sounds like a connector came loose somwhere or a wire shorted to ground?

Didn't know that about the 4.0...I had a 91 with a 3.0 and was going off that. Good thing the smart folks showed up!

Sounds to me like a wiring issue. I would also put a fuel pressure gauge on it to see if there is enough pressure.

3.0 and 4.0 are completely different engines. You can't just make an assumption about one because you saw something on the other. The 4.0 never had a distributor.

No just pulled a plug and checked it that way. The injectors click on when truck is turned to "on". I was thinking the same thing that it is electrical and something came loose and isn't in the loop anymore...

I Put a brand new fuel pump in not even a month ago.. could it still be short on pressure? I'll definitely try your suggestion, just doesnt make sense with a new pump?

New just means new, or as someone here said a while back, untested.
