 My 93 2.3L Ranger is running like crap. Here is a background history of how it started.
First it was hard start, it would backfire and miss then it would run. Check engine light came on. Pulled the following codes: 114, 116, 222 and 543. I have replaced the following components: Ignition module, crank shaft sensor, and PCM. Now the only code I have is 222. I did notice that when the battery is disconnected the engine will start and it runs pretty good until the PCM starts to take over then it runs rough and starts to miss and when it is turned off very hard to start.
I have check for damaged wiring and bad grounds. When I replaced the ICM, I took some 320 grit sandpaper and ensured that the mounting surface for the ICM was clean and free of corrosion. Double check my timing marks and they are correct. This model engine does not have a camshaft sensor.
Code 222 is telling me that there is a Loss of Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) signal-right side (duel plug EI). Both coil packs are firing good when the engine is started after the battery is disconnected. I’m at a loss for what to check next. Has anyone else had this type of problem?
Thanks in advance
