I have been reading on here for a while and just decided to post. I just bought an '88 ranger 4x4. I cannot figure out how to get the truck into 4-low. It has locking hubs to get it into 4 wheel drive but its geared the same as 2wd. There is no button or a shifter. Here are a few (lol) pics that I took to try to help diagnose this problem.

reach up and shift it.....make some linkage

rather...err... it had e shift....but all that shit got took out....you have a manual shift case, but not the oem manual shift linkage.

you can hunt down oem stuff to shift it or just make your own...

I have looked all over the t-case and cannot find anything that would resemble a shift linkage. Its just an offroad truck so I don't mind cutting holes in the floor anywhere I need to get a shifter up though there. Could you tell me how to make it manual if it was once electric?

See the threaded stud sticking out? Thats where the shift arm attaches.

The little nipple is the vent. There should be a line on there.

See the arm on the front T-case half (ignore the fact thats its only half a case. Its the best pic I could find.), thats what belongs there. The arm has a rectangular hole and slides onto the flat part of the stud. The threaded part is for the nut that holds the arm on.

hmmm nice, that would be awesome if thats all it needs. I will go out and look at it here in a min, I assume it rotates to get to 4 hi, 4 low, neutral and 2wd?

Thank you so much, that was it. I went out there and turned it with an adjustable wrench and drove it around the block, defiantly in 4 low. If you were close I'd buy you a beer. Thanks again

The shift pattern is 2wd, 4wd, neutral, low.

<-- The closest thing we have to buying a beer is rep. points (or this smiley :icon_cheers: ). You can give me some rep instead of the beer.

well i went off to bed before i seen your response, sorry bout that. i thought the above statement was clear....i should have told you to put a wrench on it, but then i would have had to explain blocking the wheels and putting it in neutral etc etc if you really could not figure it out from what i said. makes me a lazy bastard:sad:.....

but its all obvious to ya now isnt it:D

Yeah sorry, I had no idea that threaded stud turned. I was looking for something totally different. I was however smart enough to put it in neutral and block the wheels lol

The round plug is from the old auto transmission.
Evidently someone got the clutch interlock to work so you can fire the engine.

In that plug is the wiring for the neutral switch and the back up lights with 2 wires left that go to the 3/4 shift solenoid and the torque lockup.

If you can find a linkage for the transfer, just open up the shifter plate to allow for the shifter, bolt it in and you are golden.

No the round plug in the pic (10 pin) was for the E-shift tcase. The auto used a smaller round plug with 5 pins (neutral switch) and a separate square plug with 4 pins (lockup and 3-4 solenoid).
