Gentlemen, I am in need of your assistance. I have chewed through 3 starters in the last year. I took it to my mechanic because I thought it was the flywheel, he checked everything out on the flywheel and clutch and said everything looked fine, no chewed up teeth on the flywheel. The starters have been burning out because to get the truck to start (especially on cold starts), you have to crank the motor and press on the accelerator and can take anywhere between 5 seconds to 1 minute of holding down on the ignition to start the engine. My mechanic tells me that there is a fuel issue and we replace the fuel pump and the assembly tower. Issue still has not gone away. I just did a tune up with plugs (Motorcraft), wires, Cleaned off the MAF Sensor, cleaned the throttle body. I just replaced the Idle air control valve in the hopes that might be it (it runs better just didn't fix the problem). I am at a total loss right now and I have definately put in more money over the past year and a half than what the truck is worth but it's paid off and runs great besides for the start up issue. So please if anyone has any ideas or knows any other tricks please let me know. Thanks!

what were the results of the fuel pressure tests that you did before replacing the expensive fuel pump?.........and I am sure the "mechanic" you have would have changed the fuel filter before he did any thing else!!!

Use your code reader and see if you can catch any pending codes!!!

Fuel Filter was replaced, when he called me he said that there was no fuel pressure or very minimal (did not give exact numbers). The only code I've got is an EGR one and that is because there is an exhaust leak by the downpipe where the EGR tube is. As for issues it is still continuing to give me problems. Please Help!!!

maybe the fuel pressure regulator?

That is replaced when the entire fuel pump assembly is replaced (which it was).

What are the specs for fuel pressure for a 1999 Ford Ranger with the 2.5L 4 Cylinder engine?

have access to a Snap-On OBD-II reader/tester? I have one, not sure how far you are from me, though...

oops, Columbus.... too far. I suspect either TPS, or temp sensor...

I was thinking diagnostic mode, BTW, My MT-2500 lets me monitor everything.

Dang those are nice I wish I knew someone that had one...I'll try the TPS and Temperature sensor (I'm assuming coolant or is there another one?)...I'll be back on Friday with an answer

First let me ask, does it start ok, warm, and only do this cold? If so, when it does start cold, does it idle rough and smoke?

Yes, the coolant temp, which sends signal to the IAC to open, close for rich/lean.

Well as of late it seems to do it after sitting for a while. Whenever I get up in the morning to go to work it starts rough, and whenever I leave work it starts rough. You smell gas immediately after you turn the key over and hold it to try and get it to start.
