I still don't buy your reasoning. Even you keep saying it is easier to work and bend the metal at warmer temperatures, which is correct. Colder materials are more brittle. Brittle things break, crack and shatter.

The basketball hit the sheet metal and bent and stretched the metal. The fact that it stretched the metal is why the dent stayed.

To take this theory to extreme, heat the metal red hot and hit it. It bends, stretches, dents, etc. When colder, it resists being deformed. When extremely cold, it will shatter and break.

I think we are using the same science to validate our points, so lets just agree that he has a dent.
I don't think it was cold enough to shatter the sheet metal or warm enough for it to pop out.

by quarter panel, what part do you mean? the bedside? the extended cab portion behind the door? Both are pretty flat which would dent fairly easy, if it's the extended cab portion just pull out the jump seat on that side and reach through the hole and push the sheet metal back out, if it's the bedside just reach up and push it out, it'll get most of it...

To help the discussion, the cold would make the rubber on the basketball harder decreasing the surface area on contact making it easier to dent... it's a second gen Ranger, there isn't much contour on the sides for strength... a third gen probably wouldn't have dented...

Ehhhhhhh i dont know. Id pry own an avalanche before a maverick. Espicially an 8.1 3/4 ton

The bottom line is it dented because since the early 80s sheetmetal has gotten ridculiously thin.

You could of purposly lobbed that basketball at my 77 and it would of bounced off and gave you a black eye without even a ding to the truck.
