I have a 97 Ranger 2wd, 5 speed, 251, 7xx miles. Driving today and was

coming to a quick stop, hear/feel a "pop" and the brake pedal immediately goes

to within an inch or two of the floor. I get stopped, pull over and check

everything....no leaks, fluid is full, no pulling to the left or right while braking,

nothing. I do notice a hiss when i depress the pedal, that I dont think has

been there before. ABS and brake light are on, drove it home and parked for

now since its storming like crazy. What do you think the problem is, booster?

Is the pedal really stiff with the engine off and with no more vacuum left?

I would say that you're on the right track thinking that it's the booster gone bad.

However, carefully go over your rubber brake lines. You don't need to fix the booster to only later have a problem that's even worse.

Your e-brake still works, right?

Thanks for the response man, the pedal isnt stiff at all and pumping it doesnt improve or change anything. Still have brakes, and it still sops nice and straight just the pedal travel has moved a lot closer to the floor lol

did you figure it out? I had something like that happen to me yesterday. Rebuilt the rear brakes, changed all the brake hoses, drove it and it stopped great. went ahead and did the front pads. I was pumping the pedal back up and i felt a pop, it goes almost all the way to the floor, feels like I lost front brakes. No leaks i can see. Changed out the master cylinder. feels the same. -- So was it the booster or something else?
