OK 86 ranger with a from what I can gather a early to mid 90's ohv 4.0
It's obd1 has the non plastic intake and no egr valve if that helps.
It's a manual 5 speed push button 4x4

Truck run pretty good considering, issues are bad mpg est. 11-12mpg bad exhaust smells, rough and possibly low idle (no tach), and voltage drop at idle.

Finally pulled codes and not sure where to start with some and of they are related or not.

At the moment the plan is to get some MAF cleaner and electrical cleaner and clean the MAF and IAC.

Any thoughts being that this was a swap!? Your help is appreciated, sorry for the long post.

Where to start with these...

14 engine rpm signal fault or PIP circuit failure

57 axod circuit failure

66 mass air flow sensor circuit below minimum voltage

67 neutral/drive switch circuit open

85 canister purge circuit failure

86 shift solenoid circuit failure

89 transmission solenoid circuit failure

You have an ecu looking for an automatic trans, you could also have a wiring issue with the pip, causing timing issues, which would lead to bad mpg...

The 14 and the 66 are the two I would concentrate on. Either one of those could cause your issue by itself, both together can cause real issues.

57, 67, 86, and 89 are all irrelevant, all caused by having an auto computer with a manual trans.

The 85 is an oddball. I get that on my truck from time to time, but not every time. It depends on what I tell the scanner it's talking to, a Ranger or an Explorer.

Next step is to figure out what year computer you are dealing with. Pop it out and find the part number on the computer. It will be something like XXXX-12A650-XX. The first set is the prefix and gives information about the vehicle the part came from. The second place should be a number that corresponds to a model year, so say it's E2TZ-12A650-B that means that means we are working with a 1992 model year, PCM, and it's the second revision of the part

OK so just to be sure codes.... 67, 86, and 89 there is nothing I can do about due to having a manual? Are any of the other codes transmission related that I cannot do anything about?

Excuse my ignorance what is PIP? Where is it located and how do I diagnose it?
Thanks in advance....

If I went to a pull yard and found a mid 90s 4.0 manual ranger would the ecu plug and play and remove mentioned tranny codes?

PIP isn't a part, it's a signal. It's the Primary Ignition Profile. It's generally calculated off the cam sensor, or the pickup in a distributor engine, or the crank sensor if the cam sensor is not present.

Here is a good read on PIP and SPOUT:

Your transmission codes are 100% due to it looking for things that aren't there. They are all circuit codes which means the circuits are open, or nothing happens when the circuit is commanded. You have two options for fixing those codes, install a manual computer, or an automatic transmission.

Like I said, at this point it's best to figure out which year control system you are looking at. Some of these problems are going to be diagnosed differently based on the year and style of the control system. You also need to figure that out before selecting a junk yard computer.

OK could I find the proper ecu, or is it not worth the trouble?
I am going to clean the maf this weekend and will look up the tread to test it with my multimeter, and go from there.
Does this tell us what it's out of and the year? Thanks for your help and prompt response.

Okay what actually controls PIP, without a computer how would I go by determine why it's not functioning properly? Thanks!

F07F-12A650-ABB...what is that...a 90, maybe late 89? :)

I agree, an auto computer on a manual vehicle will throw so many codes, you'll chase your tail. Resolve that first, or you'll throw so much money at it that it won't even be funny.
