So for the last who knows how long my 2.3 has been making a sound that's driving me nuts. It sounds like it's originating near the alternator or belt tensioner. The sound is hard to describe, but I think it is probably one of the pulleys but I'm not sure. It sounds like a faint knock, like maybe a pulley bearing or something of the like.

It is worst when I'm in fourth or 5th gear, when the engine is at constant rpm. It's there through all gears, I just dont hear it as loud past the exhaust during acceleration.

Any Ideas magic box who knows all?

My belt tensioner pulley bearing went out a few months ago, it wasn't a knocking sound. It was more of a loud Sshhhhhhh sound. Check the 2 hoses coming off the DPFE, they can get hard over time and crack. This vents exhaust gasses out of the exhaust manifold.
