I checked my fluid in my tranny, seems over full, as soon as I took the fill plug out, the fluid came out fast, but was not ATF, looked and smelled like gear oil. Do all ford rangers with a 4.0 take ATF? Are there some trans out there that take gear oil?
If it takes ATF, what is the best method to change over? Just drain as much as I can, then fill ATF? or What?

If it's an M5OD, which it probably is, it takes Mercon (NOT MERCON V!!!!!) ATF. Drain it, Fill with ATF, drive for a week and then change it again.

The trannies that take gear oil were never put behind a 4.0 to my knowledge.

I need to know how to tell what type transmission I have, where is the plate or stamped numbers?

I now know that on the Transfer case, I will have to weld an old extension bar into the plugs, they are froze solid and only slipping (rounding out) the plugs.

If it's the 1993 truck in your profile, then it has the M5OD, which uses Mercon ATF. That was the only manual tranny available that year.

Thanks, and that is my truck in my Avatar. Is there an easier way anyone has found to break free those plugs in the T-case? I'd really hate to lose 2 good extension bars .

Well, got the oil out yesterday and let it drip for about 20 minutes to make sure I got as much as I could out. There was WAY to much in there!! I drained about a quart from the fill plug. Then went to the drain plug and it would not budge! So out come the vise grips, and tapped them with a hammer, after 5 min of that, the plug broke free (idiot really torqued down on that, hate to see what the oil filter is going to be like). But after refilling and checking for leaks, took it for a ride. At first I did not notice a difference, then after about a mile or two, seemed to shift better.
This tranny always had a "hissing" sound in 1,2,3,and 5, 4th was always quiet. Maybe a bearing? 1st going to 2nd sometimes gave a little trouble if I wound on 1st to much, but those things seemed to back off a little - not much, but a little better. That much is done, now the T-case this weekend, among a few other things.

in 4rth the input and output shafts are coupled togther, there is no load on the countershaft, its spinning of course but isnt under load. could be worn gears or a bearing. just keep it full of oil and be on the lookout for a replacement. 2nd gear was the first to go in my trans.

I think the "sometimes hard to get into second" is a M5OD trait. Mine is the same way, I am expecting it to fall into 2nd, and sometimes I have to literally jam it in.
