Hey guys, i need help choosing a cam for my truck. i was going to get a custom ground, but its just too much for me to spend now. The truck is a 99 ranger, with a 96 5.0 from an explorer. The lower end is stock. the truck has edelbrock performer heads that are ported and polished with 1.6 roller rockers. I sent the gt40 lower out to get ported by Tmoss, and i am going to run 30 lb injectors. I also plan on running a 100 shot. The truck is my daily driver that i want to be able to beat lightnings, and get it into the 12s. What cam would you guys recommend? Also, the truck is a tremmec 3550 5 speed
thanks

i would get the lunati bracket master 2 camshaft. awesome sound. good low end perfomance. and for under 200 bucks, you get the whole kit with the lifters. www.jegs.com

since you have a hyd roller cam, i would use a FMS B303, great street manners, matched well with your other mods!

i dont know how much experience you have with these cams, but if you DONT know, hyd roller cam dont develop the wear a normal flat tappet cam does... they really last forever, unless a lifter takes a crap! so buying a used one is safe and smart! :icon_thumby:

Actually Ford does not reccomend any of their performance cams for use with the Explorer EEC-V computer. They had so many people trying to use the "E" cam with the Explorer computer they had to put a disclaimer in the catalog. Only two Ford cams that work well are the stock Explorer or the cam from the GT. All has to do with the LSA, Explorer computer doesn't like anything tighter than 114 degs. Way around that is to get an adjustable timing set and retard the timing 2-4 degs. Comp Cam does have two cams with the 114 deg LSA.

i didnt know if he was runnning the explorer electronics, with all the other mods i didnt even think about it!

I don't know if the "problem" can be programed out or not.

Yes, i have the explorer electronics, but when i have it tuned i can just have the timing retarded right? Also, i have heard the ford motorsports cams are way outdated. Anything better?
thanks

I'm going to try the Comp Cam XE264HR-14 mainly due to the 114 deg LSA. It has a little bit more lift than the "E" cam, can't remember how the durations compare. It's the same cam used in these test, your heads are included, might give you a real world idea of what to expect. Test was done with a 650cfm carb but that should matter much (?). You never mentioned what headers you plan on running, Torque Monsters I hope. The Edel's are one of the last tests

Will this cam work with stock pistons? Also, will i need to buy different lifters?
thanks

I think with the 1.6 ratio rockers you are good to go. Pretty sure people have run the stock pistons with the "E" cam and used the 1.7 ratio. I'll check. (Duh, brain cramp, Explorers use the same short block as the Mustang, shouldn't be a problem)! Roller lifters get very little wear, any idea of how many miles on the motor? My guess is that something else would let go before the lifters. I've got the Ford Shop manual for the '97' Explorer if you ever need something from it.
Dave - Mikepotts, your comments?

i had an 88 gt we pushed the envelope on. we had a stock long block and used a B303 w/ 1.7s no problem. 250 wet kit! worked nicely! :headbang:

i dont think the FMS cams are outdated, yeah they have been around for a while, but still have good performance to offer, especially when found used in the sub $100 range.

there are better cams, but heck! unless you are gonna race in a lift rule class, why spend the extra coin.

i think the explorer shortblocks are the same as the post '92 mustangs with hyper"pathetic" pistons, the earlier ones had forged pistons. no biggie if no poweradder is in the plans.
