I have an 88 ford ranger v6 2wd and takes about 3 times to crank and some gas to get her started. Thought it was distributor rotor so replaced that and cap checked feul filter on outside wasn't that. Hoping it's not the one inside tank. I changed my idle a while ago after a tune up could that have messed something up. Thanks

well i figured i would check out your posts, and it is kinda harsh, search alot that is your best friend. post a show off your truck and what you are working on and wut problems there are. and what kinda engine is it a 2.8 or a 2.9 cause a carb will need a bit o' gas to get it started otherwise it might have alittle problem there

2.9

it's 2.9
fuel injected

possibly, i'm not really up on 2.9 stuff so hopefully someone will chime in on it. but don't worry about the in tank pump cause it really isn't that much of a PITA just takes some patience. you might have to re gap your plugs or tweak your timing a bit. does it run rough or anything. don't want state the worst but the 2.9s were known to have cracked heads after a bit.

could be the check valve in the fuel pump if you have to key on and key off 3 times to get it to start. essentially fuel pressure will bleed off and the gas will go back into the tank, leaving the fuel lines empty. that explains why you have to crank it so long to get it to fire, having the key in the run position (either 2 clicks forward or in the start position) will make the fuel pump energize and fill the lines up with fuel again, its just a matter of a few seconds or cranks before the fuel reaches the fuel rail and pressure regulator, and then it will run. let us know if this sounds like what youre experiencing. there are also 2 pumps on this truck, a low pressure (which is in the tank) and a high pressure (which is on the inside of the drivers side frame rail, almost directly below the front of the drivers door).

Rough start

Well I have to crank it three times and give it some gas, I checked the inside rail fuel pump by by passin gfrom battery and grounding it and it was running, but didn't really want to get into the tank just yet until i was almost sure it was the tank fuel pump. It doesn't run rough, only when it's cold, but if the heads were craked like you said is there any modification I could do to get around that problem. Thanks
