Hello, i am new to this forum my name is Ariel. I recently just purchased a used 97' Ford Ranger it has a '04 engine in it. My truck is a 3.0l V6, 2WD, and lifted. The only problem i have with the truck is a ticking sound when i accelerate, im wondering what the cause could be an if its a major problem i should worry about? If you know anything of what it may be please let me know i am a First time owner of a Ford. The help would be appreciated. Thank you!:D

Hi Ariel, welcome. There are a couple different things it could be, lifter tick, fuel ping due to timing being slightly off or low octane, or exhaust leak. If the tick is not really loud or noticeable, it won't hurt the motor, but still have it checked out by a reliable source. Where are you located, another member might be close enough to look at it for you...

The poor mans/womans stethescope is a long screwdriver. While it is running touch the screwdriver to different components on the engine and be real careful of moving parts. Put your ear on the handle and you may be able to isolate where the noise is coming from. The closer to the tick the louder it will be. You can listen to bearings, lifters, injectors. It is kind of fun tie back long hair and loose clothes and give everything a listen.

Well im in rancho cucamonga, an the ticking is noticeable an loud but like i said only when i accelerate. Thanks for getting back to me though. I guess im going to have to find someone who knows what their doing to fully see whats wrong. Should i be worried about the ticking?

and at Kimcrwbr1 Im going to have to try that on my next day off to see exactly where its coming from, it seems like its behind the engine when we were listening for it last time. weve googled everything an nothing was helpful, so im going to try this an see.

Use the Search feature for "pinging" and see if that fits your situation.

Been a lot of threads on the 3.0 with pinging problems.

Welcome to The Ranger Station!

If it sounds like its coming from behind the motor, most likely its an exhaust leak, which won't hurt the motor or cause harm. It will prevent you from passing a smog test, so have it looked at by a reputable shop...
