This site looks to be very informative and well managed. I'm looking forward to reading a lot and hopefully contributing at some point. I've been active on a few forums over the years but this is a first for a Ranger forum. The first new vehicle I ever purchased was a 1987 Ranger 2.9 2wd. It was a great truck but I only kept it a little over a year since I needed more interior space. Traded it in on a 1988 2.9 2wd Bronco II. Another good truck, though it never had the power that the first truck had. I had that for a few years and moved on to other larger trucks and cars, mostly Fords. I did buy another Ranger in '95 (almost the exact truck I had in '87) and drove it for about 3 years. So I've had a bit of Ranger experience. I recently picked up a 2001 Ranger XLT EC 4.0 4x4 that I'm in the process of getting roadworthy after 3 years sitting dead. New parts so far: battery, PATs receiver, fuel pump, radiator, upper and lower t-stat housing and t-stat, idle air motor, rear door latch cable ends and several other misc parts, pieces and sensors. I do have it running and driving now, but it's not even close to done. The radiator was replaced due to the transmission cooler being ruptured, so I'm still in the process of multiple transmission flushes to get the water out. Also, thinking the HGs may be blown and probably warped heads. The truck has 258k miles on it, so I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. Anyway, for anyone still reading (you have a better attention span that I do) I am pretty handy with a wrench (I also own a 6.0 and a 6.7 Powerstroke) and plan to bring this little truck back to its former glory.

Welcome to TRS. Be sure to use the HOW TO Tech section. There's a lot of info.

Thanks. I think I've pretty much decided the headgaskets (and probably heads) are toast. Trying to decide now if I want to try to pull the motor out directly or just lift the cab and go from there. Leaning hard to pulling the cab. That way I can clean everything really well and maybe even run through the trans while it's all open and easily accessible.

Welcome aboard!
