Hello, first time post on TRS.

I was wondering if anyone could answer my question regarding my O/D on my 2003 ford ranger.
When i start up my truck the O/D is ,by default, always on. I was wondering if it was a good idea to always turn it off manually before driving around in the city.
Also, if it is recommended for me to turn it off, is it likely to ware out the on/off button...does that happen on a lot of these trucks?

Thanks,

-Jmicko

P.S. out of curiosity...if it is a good idea to turn it off, is there a way to somehow override the default setting and have it be off when i start up the truck?

Turning off the overdrive is only required for hauling a load or trailer, or going up a big-ass steep hill. Normal day-to-day driving I wouldn't fiddle with it.

From my understanding, it almost works like an extra gear in the transmission... So if you turn it off, you'll hurt your gas mileage.

Turning it off while towing a load stops it from kicking in, so the O/D doesn't kick in and drop your power to the wheels.

No Way that I know of for it to start with it disengaged, but u will do no harm turnin the od off around town but speeds where od would be needed for mileage 50+ and then u can easily turn it back on, won't hurt the button or wear it out

Your computer wont let the OD engage until like 70km/hr anyways, so if you drive the speed limit, turning it off means absolutely nothing until you hit the highway.

U can achieve better mileage in town with the od off, it has a different shift pattern with the od off, better mileage at lower speeds

Ah, cool. Thanks you!

I find myself sometimes forgetting to turn o/d off when i got a load in the back (i.e. dump run). Gotta get into the habit of doing that.

Thanks,

That doesn't seem to make any sense at all. Turning off the OD should kill your gas mileage if anything. Why would it change the shift pattern to shift LOWER if the whole reason you can turn it off is to stop it from shifting so you have the wanted power to pull a trailer or haul a load??

If I'm cruising around 45 mph on a hilly/curvy road and I find the trans downshifts a lot and just keeps going in and out of OD, I turn it off. All that downshifting is not good for the trans.
