Heaviest thing you've towed with your Ranger.

Someone in another thread got their panties in a bunch over tow ratings so I'll start.

Here's the heaviest thing I've got a weight slip for. Truck with me in it is ~3500. Didn't fit on the scale so the "steer axle" is the whole truck.

Love it .,I thought a whole pallet of pavers in the bed .St7ock 94 3.0. No bAck breaks was somethng ..nice work !!

My ‘94 2wd/2.3/manual/4.10’s once towed a short distance approximately 3500/4000 pounds. Was pulling a small tandem axle trailer with a 1963 ford 2000 tractor on it. Didn’t like it, liked stopping less. Shoulda put the ranger on the trailer & pulled it with the tractor! The 2011 3.0 awd escape did good with the same load though.View attachment 138054

that is the link to my flickr page for the 94. The grille guard was a warn trans4mer. I bought it through a auto parts store many years ago. I no longer have the truck, I loved it & the retro look I created. unfortunately rust was getting the best of it, the cab where the cab mounts are were badly rusted, frame had been patched & needed more patching. Its been 2 years since I sold it, been looking for another ranger, I drive a 09 escape now.

So freaking cool, how long did you own it? Also was the frame rusted out bag enough it. Cracked it looked like it was bending up

I had it for 7 years, the frame was bad in several spots as well as the cab itself where the cab mounts met the body, I had also redone the floor pans but its days were definitely numbered. About a year after It sold I did see it on marketplace, im not sure if its still on the road or not. Im looking at a 98 reg cab 4x4 right now, 3.0 auto & it was a city owned truck. “commercial white”. less than 100K, driver seat looks like its been in and out of a lot. I see potential in it- starting with a gear change, dont know what it has now but traditionally ford puts too high a gear behind 3.0’s

I’ve got a 94 rights now it’s doing well it’s older but I got it from a guy who bought it from Texas and it is now in Illinois but I believe it was sold in Illinois when new at a dealer because there is a very old dealership emblem on it, then it went to Texas and now it’s been back up for 3 years and then I bought it 4 months ago

Given the weight reduction on the bumper and the fender... I would question how much of the frame is left on this one too. Especially since the bumper looks to have no damage aside from cancer and appears to be preparing to leave the chat...

Yeah I screenshoted the pictures so I could zoom in & it does look like more than a bent bumper, think I will pass on it. Did see a gen 1 longbed 4x with a 351 that looked interesting. More motor than Id really want but does look cool.

Road salt's gone so it's time to get back to using the Ranger.

~1000lb of tire. ~2000lb dolly. Handled like dogshit the whole time. 55mph max. Really speaks volumes about how much any of these numbers mean.

Meanwhile this is 4000lb of cargo (empty tare is with the trailer) and went 70 no problem. Gee, it's almost like weight distribution and trailer handling (i.e. not being all unsprung weight) count for a lot.

Continuing to post negligent behavior and pretend that it's safe and/or legal isn't improving the odds of this thread staying public.

And who defines negligent? These trucks are rated for 4xxx pounds. Considering that the RV industry, supposed professionals, will just straight sell you stuff that's over rating without a care in the world it would take the kind of intellectual creativity only the most dishonest could possibly muster to construe being solidly under advertised ratings as negligent.

Anyway, here's what Gemini has to say about GCWR and surprisingly (not) it matches how enforcement seems to operate in reality.

Your first post in this thread detailed how you hauled a bunch of shit that made your rig weigh 3 ENTIRE TONS more than what the manufacturer said was safe... AND you provided a picture of your scale slip to prove it lol... even the wettest of waterheads would realize that uhh.. that's pretty fcking negligent 🤦🏻‍♀️ ffs.

Also trying to use goddamn AI in your defense 😂😂😂😂 it wasn't much longer ago than a few months that Gemini was telling people who searched for pancake recipes to add 1/2 cup of Elmer's glue to the mix for EXTRA FLUFFY GOODNESS! orrrrr.... Suggesting to people who were desperate enough to be searching Google on ways to cure their crippling depression and stop thinking about killing themselves... "Suicide is always an alternative"

The only thing stupider than A.I.. well... I won't go there.

Gtfooh.

I'm willing to use Websters definition. No need for anything fancier.

negligent

neg·li·gent ˈne-gli-jənt
Simple DefinitionA Simple Definition is available from our Learner's Dictionary to help you understand the meaning faster.
1
a
: marked by or given to neglect especially habitually or culpably
… was a careless workman, negligent of details.—Edith Hamilton
b
: failing to exercise the care expected of a reasonably prudent person in like circumstances
negligent about traffic regulations
The defendant in a negligence action may use contributory negligence as a defense. If the plaintiff is also negligent and that negligent action contributed to the loss, he or she may be denied recovery.—Robert I. Mehr
2
: marked by a carelessly easy manner

Whether something is illegal or not, or covered by insurance or not, we, as a website need to refrain from promoting things that are blatantly unsafe, such as operating these vehicles above their rated capacities. To promote such actions is negligent. We don't want anyone hurt. We don't want anyones vehicle or property damaged. Therefore, conversations openly suggesting that operating overloaded is "ok" are something we avoid.
