Why dose my heater work fine part of the time and than quit working? The radiator is full. changed the themastat last winter and did same thing:bawling: hot than cold.

All I can think of is air in the system, but you seem to have that covered. Does your normal use consist of long trips (20 minutes or more), short runs (0-15 minutes) , or a combination? Just thinking maybe on short trips the coolant isn't getting warmed up enough to keep warm air flow consistent through the vents.

Going to have to go with previous poster, you have an air bubble in your cooling system most likely in the heater core somewhere causing you to have intermittent heat.

What vehicle?

Also, go for a drive, get it up to operating temp, and then pop the hood and grab the heater hoses. If one is hot and one isn't then you have a plugged up heater core. Poor flow through the heater core can also cause your issue.

^^Good point adsm08.

Yes, what year and engine is in your Ranger?

Could be the heat control valve/bypass valve has a broken flap, so opens and then closes.

Found this semi-related thread with pictures :), but it is about reducing "pinging" in the 3.0l's.

In the picture it looks like your heat control valve is near the firewall on one of the heater hoses.
It would be vacuum operated, remove vacuum line and check it for cracks, then move valve manually and see if it feels funny, like the flap inside the hose is slipping.
You could also put a vacuum line on it and suck on it, see if valve opens and stays open, if you have to keep sucking then control valve diaphragm has a leak, replace it.
If you want to check further you will need to remove one hose from the valve and visually check it, this would mean draining a bit of coolant.
