I own a 1990 Ranger (2x4, Standard, 2.3 Litre), and need to change my Core, and possibly the Fan. Will I need to remove the Entire Dash in order to do this?
On my '94 the heater core was fairly simple to get out.
Under the glove box there is a plastic housing with 4 screws at the bottom, take out the 4 screws and bottom plate comes off
Remove the heater hoses on firewall side and wiggle the core back and out, have a towel under it as you have to move it around and coolant can spill out.
I did need to get some weather stripping for the new core as the old stuff on the old core was disintegrating, peel and stick stuff
save yourself the coolant spill, once you remove the hoses from the engine side of the firewall, use compressed air to evacuate the remaining coolant in the core before you remove it. then your interior won't smell like coolant for months.
Heater core replacement is fairly simple. Most 'difficult' part for me was getting the heater hoses off the fittings at the firewall. After that it's five heater core access panel screws and a pull rearward and down. If you have access to a Haynes manual it's covered on pages 3-9 and 3-10.
