buttoning up my 302 swap and was wondering if it matters what way the water flows through the heater core. i cant remember how it was hooked up before...

Matters not. Use new clamps and hoses and you should be good to go.

sometimes you can make the heater work better by reversing the hoses to the core

I hooked mine up backwards once and got air conditioning. Make sure you get the pump hose on the outside or its gonna blow cold air.

What? No. It's hot water flowing through a radiator and it does not matter which way it goes.
