98 Ranger......having heat/AC issues. Have searched the site and came accross the blend door issues, but not sure that this is where my problems are. Here is the issue: randomly the air will stop moving through the selected vent/outlet selected on the control panel. It's like the door is closed on the fan box and the air is not allowed to be directed into the duct work. The blower motor is functioning/running correctly, but when the problem occurs you get little to no air coming out of the selected vent outlet or any other outlet. Then if you cycle the heater/AC off and on multiple times or shut the truck off for a brief period of time, it will start blowing air through the duct you've selected. Adjusting the temperature control up and down does regulate the heat setting...moving it from hot to cold correctly, even when you do have the air restriction in the duct work (when its not blowing). So it does appear like the blend door motor is working and I can hear/feel it running when I adjust the temp selector. Does the blend door/blend door actuator motor just control the temperature or does it also direct the air to the selected vent or is the vent selector and air direction ran by vacuum? Trying to determine if I need to do the new blend door repair/replacement prior to cutting the box to replace it, is it the conrol panel unit or a vacuum problem.

Sounds like your climate control panel is defective...I'd try another panel and go from there...

The blend door just regulates temperature. Does it stop blowing completely or does it go to defrost? The system will default to the defrost position if it loses vacuum from the engine. If it does, you have a vacuum leak.

+1 on the vacuum lines first look for loose or cracked fittings or vacuum lines I believe it should only go to defrost when the throttle is pressed hard WOT in the floor or vent position.
