Heat problems..

To preface my first post, I'd like to make note that I have browsed through the forums already looking for a solution to my problem, and have not yet found a solid answer, so I would like to produce my dilemma and see if any of you have a solution to it..

So, I installed a new thermostat a few months ago. Previously, in my 1995 3.0 Manual, no a/c, Ranger 4x4, I had found that my heat was a little bit lacking. The thermostat on the dash would generally remain lower than normal operating temperature, but not in the C. Regardless, I was still getting some heat, just not a lot. It was warm enough to get through the winter but never as strong as, well, any other vehicle I've ever driven with the heat enabled. More like if I was running at 3/4 dial, when the dial was all the way on hot. Furthermore, this temperature was constant regardless of the fan speed.. which means, a higher fan speed yielded a colder effect, since the same amount of heat was being extinguished into the system a higher fan speed would simply create a lower mixture of heat vs. cold.

So I installed a new thermostat. I didn't check it, as has been stated should be done on this forum, by boiling it. So my issue could be the thermostat. I'd like to verify all of this before I take the vehicle apart, however.

And I installed the thermostat in the summer time. It's warm outside, it's a lot easier to work on a vehicle outside when it's warm out..
I used the heat once or twice during that time, maybe a cold Connecticut night or two during late summer, and the vehicle produced heat.. maybe a few degrees warmer than outside, so I kind of figured I was back where I started before, maybe the thermostat was not the issue I was having before. The vehicle still ran a little cold, too.

And then it got cold out. Like, a few days ago. It got really cold. So I turned the heat on, and to my dismay, absolutely no heat came out. In fact, the air was just as cold as outside. If not colder. Cuz it was blowing in my face. It kind of sucked. Actually, my hour long drive to work, while seeing my breath in the truck.. well, it wasn't fun, ok?

Which is when I popped on to this forum to see if I could find a solution to my issue. I have realized it could be one of a few things:

- Thermostat - again, I just put a new one in. I don't know if it works or not, and I have the same result as before. The old thermostat was pretty old, but I don't know if it was broken or not.

- Blend door - Could be this, but I see everyone on here is stating they have A/C with their blend door? Do I still have this thing? I checked it out in my dash, and I see a giant door going to the air intake to the right of the accuator.. that opens and closes, but is that the blend door??? If so, it seems like it works. And the air coming form my intake, well, that's cold at operating temperatures, too, when I finger it open to feel. Do I just have to pop the accuator off and try the jerry rig fix of popping a needle into the shaft, see if that's the problem or not?

- Heater core - Could be this, too, I'd imagine. I opened up my hood when the vehicle was hot and felt the two tubes going into my firewall. The one on the passenger side was mildly warm, but it could've just been my freezing cold (and wet.. it's raining outside!) fingers making that up. The driver's side hose was quite warm, significantly warmer than the passenger side. I didn't let it warm up REAL long, though, the vehicle.. I just took a quick 10 minute drive, and then let it idle for a few, and turned the vehicle off to check it out real fast.

Or is there some sort of other problem? Maybe a blown fuse? Something I'm missing?

I'm more than happy to provide any necessary details about my vehicle, or anything.. i'm kind of stumped at this point, and quite frustrated.

My plan of action was going to be to purchase a new thermostat, boil it to ensure it works, and then install it tomorrow evening after work. I don't really want to do all that effort if my current therm. sounds like it's working properly. If that doesn't work, I was going to do the jerry rig of the blend door.. first, obviously, feel the hole to see if it feels broken or not.

And if neither of those worked, I was going to run water through the driver's side hose into the firewall, to flush the heater core, if that's blocked.

But if none of those three work, well, what do I do? And does any of the information here make any of you guys think that maybe one of these issues is more likely than the other, which would minimize the amount of time spent fixing this issue, time that I don't really have a whole hell of a lot of?

Thank you in advance.

The symptoms sound like a blocked heater core to me. The cold side tube should only be a few degrees cooler than the hot side tube. A good way to see if the thermostat is working is while your driving, keep an eye on your temp gauge. If you see it raise, then cool back down 20 or 30 degrees, and it does so consistently, then the thermostat is doing it's job.

+1 on the clogged heater core. you dont have a/c so you should not have a heater control valve(I think). both heater hoses should be about the same temp one could be just a little different then the other. if not you either have the heater control valve closed or broken( see above), you have a clogged heater hose or your heater core is clogged. I think 95 and newer you have to pull the dash to change the core. so you want to backflush it and hope it works. ....
