Heads Up: Scorpion Spray In Bed Liner

One of the big reasons why I like a drop in liner. Easier to keep clean too. They also add rigidity to the floor of the truck.

Our 2019 Ranger has the factory applied "ToughBed" spray in liner. It, like all other spray in liners, is like 5 grit sandpaper. Being a guy that hauls finish grade lumber in his truck I really have to be careful not to slide the boards on the bedliner... it puts some nasty scratches on the boards.

A big deal? Not at all. A nuisance? Kind of. For sure a 1st world problem.

Those drop in liners cause rust problems by trapping debris between the liner and truck bed, you'll never know your bed has rusted till its too late, luckily I caught it in time in my 88 F250. A spray in bedliner yes, drop in heck no.

Meh..... Results vary based on the quality of the fit of the bed liner, and the quality of the paint in the bed.

I've owned (2) Tacoma's, both had factory "Toyota"drop in bed liners. The last Tacoma was an '02. We bought it new and traded it in last Sept 2019 for our Ranger. Toyota drop-ins fit very tight in the truck, no chance of debris getting under the liner. After 17 years and 177,000 miles the paint in the bed was scuffed in spots, but there was no rust at all.

Contrast that to a guy over on the ranger5g site who's 2019 Ford Ranger's drop-in liner had worn the paint to the point the bed was rusted.... in about 1 months time.

Based on my 1st hand experience, I chalk up the Toyota success rate to superior engineering of the drop in bed liner and superior paint on the bed.

What about bed rugs, anyone use those? I’m wondering if that’s better for me with a cap.

Does anybody know if you can get the genuine Ford spray in bedliner after taking delivery?
Or is Line-X or Rhino better?

Can't get the Ford ToughBed anyplace but the factory.

Line-X says their liner is better than Ford. They have a video where they remove the factory liner (see below). When the factory liner is applied they do not scuff up the factory paint. You could argue though if the truck was recently painted... it doesn't need scuffed up. If you watch the above video the factory uses a clear primer before the liner is sprayed robotically.

We're pleased with the factory ToughBed liner on our SuperCab. I'd rather have it done by Ford than folks I don't know.. climbing around on my new truck, sanding the paint in the bed.

The one thing I don't like is the factory liner doesn't cover the end of the bed... right where the tailgate closes? That's where a lot of abuse happens. In the Line-X video below it appears they coat all the way down at the end of the bed. If your going to haul gravel, etc. in your truck that should be enough to make you choose Line-X. We have a 5'x10' trailer that we haul nasty stuff in... not in our truck bed.

My drop in is 10 years old, bed underneath still looks brand new.

I have mixed feelings on drop in bed liners... I've seen them rub the paint and hold moisture and rot the bed floor on the extreme side. For most it seems like rubbing the paint off is the norm. I just think about what it would look like if it wasn't in there...

Mine appears to have had the drop in liner and a cap since new... I will be curious to see what it looks like... that is if I ever take it out.

The factory ford drop in liners have rubber pads on them so the liner doesnt slide and scratch the paint.
