I need to get the headliner out of my '93 ext-cab and see a problem before I even start. Getting most of the trim pieces out is obviously a matter of removing screws and christmas tree retainers, but behind the driver/passgr seats are trim panels that reach from floor to ceiling, and include attachments for rear seat belts and side window latches. Can anyone advise me on getting those two long panels off-- or do I need to? --and then getting the headliner out of the cab? Any other advice to make it as easy as it can be? Are there any good tutorials and videos on the subject? -thx

When I took my headliner out to reline it, I did remove the tall side panels. But not completely.

I had the front seats out already to steam clean so there was some space to work with. I unscrewed the rear Window latches and rear seat belt to allow the panels to come out and just tipped them down with the front seat belts still attached. That gave me enough clearance to get the headliner out through the door. Don't see how you could get it out without folding it in half or removing the front seats. It barely fit through the door opening on an angle.

Thanks, Jeff. I was hoping someone would come along and say those panels didn't have to come all the way off. Bending the headliner some to get out isn't as much a concern as bending it to get back in, with its brand new fabric getting creased, too. : ( I'll be taking the driver seat out to have some repairs done, but I suspect the headliner will only fit out the passenger side. That's just the way it be sometimes.

Thanks again for the helpful info.

Also -- make 100% certain your third brake light isn't leaking before you spend all that time replacing headliner fabric. After you get the headliner out, its easy to see. test it by spraying the area down with a hose. It's so common I can almost guarantee it is leaking if you've never resealed it before. A little rtv goes a long way but if you can get hold of a new gasket it looks cleaner.
