I bought an '84 bronco2 for $2oo,changed the plugs, wires, etc and noticed there was oil on every plug, would it mean the heads just need to be rebuilt or the pistons need to be reringed, any help would be appreciated,it needs to pass the stupid smog test.:headbang:

How many miles are on the 2.8? The valve seals are known to leak when the engine get high miles put on it.

How many miles,?.It's a salvage title. The guy I bought it from maybe wasn't able to get it to pass smog, don't know but those seals could be the culprit.I checked one of the new plugs and it looked clean.

Check the Valve stem seals...
thats what i did over my 4th of july weekend lol
But i wouldnt call what was in there seals about 4 of them werent seated sittin on the top of the stems and all of em lost the top half causing MASSIVE oil burn and blow by.
On top of that all that burnt oil caused my intake manifolds to carbon up real bad causing my egr to stop working... so start with the seals before anything!

I plan on replacing them.Do I need to replace the locks or can I reuse the old ones?

You should be able to reuse the locks, and try to keep them with their respective valves.

Thanks. Now would it be easier to just pull the heads,on the passenger side theres the f'n smog tube and theres hardly any room to work and who knows what the valves and pistons look like, probably a stupid question.I don't have a compressor, just wonderin'.

I have an 85 B2 and I know that with the smog tube on the passenger side if you remove the air valves that are connected to the tubes....Take the clamp off of the top and the bottom...you should be able to pull the assembly out of the way. The top tube runs to the back of the engine and the bottom tube comes from the air pump then the third tube, on mine anyway, just goes under the truck.

Dont know if yours is set up the same or not but I know thats what we had to do on mine.

You might need the compressor to pass California emissions. If they see it isnt on then more or less they will fail you on the spot.

the smog tubes are threaded into the heads and i don't want to risk screwin'em up.f'n emissions, what a waste.the truck might go bye bye with a newer ranger takin' it's place, gotta wait and see.would love to keep it though.

Ahhh Dont give up!
If anything keep it as a project and get a new one!

You dont even want to know the bad things i have found and replaced on my truck...
just keep at it 1 step/part at a time!

I'm gonna keep it,the ranger is gonna go bye bye.The ranger overheated and fused 3 parts of the no. 1 piston to the cylinder wall but still runs allright, just won't pass smog and I just need a new vehicle. The baby bronc will be a project, still love those old fords.:icon_thumby:
