does anyone have any input on this? because i know for a fact my head gasket is blown on my 01 cause i need to fill the radiator every like 500 miles and its starting to burn oil now..

i know i looked it up on alldata.com and they said that i need a tool kit called like "ford cam timing kit" or somthing like that... i was wondering if anyone knew a cheap place where i could buy this?

and has anyone else had problems with the head gasket on the 2001 4.0? btw my truck has 153k on her

i'm pretty sure 2001 was the first year of a SOHC. I'm not exactly sure of what tool kits you would need. with 153,000 miles i would begin to think about other things i could replace or service with the head coming off.

Ok lets start from thebegining

Is the engine puking out the overflow? If not then you need to look outside the engine for the leak. When head gaskets go it is from running low coolant. Few if ANY head gaskets go away all by themselves. Simply having low coolant levels usually means there is a small outside the engine leak.
Many times one must crawl his ass under the vehicle with a flashlight to find a single drop of coolant leading to the leak.

it leaks out of the back of the heads in the rear of the motor.. cause i crawled under there a few days ago cause i noticed a pool of somthing under my truck.. so i looked (somehow) got my hand up behind the head and felt anti freeze from there... and its lost ALOT of power.. it can hardly spin tires on dirt now before i could just tap the gas and it would blow around lol

and its SOHC

geezus... youre spewing water right through the block? how hot did you get that motor? (low coolant and subsequently getting it hot IS about the only way head gaskets go bad... at least in these motors.)

Make sure!

Before jumping into the deep end. Could it be a freeze plug? Just guessing where the coolant is comong from won't cut it! Find out for sure and certain it is coming out the head gasket. Pulling the heads on that engine and then finding it wasn't a head gasket is a loser for sure.
Could it be coming from above the head and you only see it there?
Is it green? Could you be looking at condensation from an a/c?
If it truly is comng from a head gasket it would be one in a million or even less chance.

I agree with Big Jim, if your block was busted or had a leak, you wouldn't be filling up every 500 if you know what I mean..and if it's a freeze plug that you can't see or get to, (i know, i've done it), you got to take stuff off til you can get to it or pull the motor, don't go cheap and get a tub stopper LOL. If your burning oil you should get it checked for blowby

Got a point there.. If it is freeze plugs pull the engine rather than the heads! That particular engine is a bitch to do head gaskets. And then do em all if one is rusted out, all of em are in trouble.

i think its also leaking from the thermostat housin cause i noticed a pool of antifreeze there.. and sometime im gonna run a compression test.. if that comes back failed its the head gasket

but it doesnt matter now.. truck is smashed agian... this time the cab got smashed so i dont think im gonna fix it might find the same thing cheap with a blown motor or somthing and just take the nose off my black one and put it on my wheelin rig

The coolant puking tells you about a blown head gasket.. A compression test might be confused with many other possible problems.. So if it ain't puking it ain't got a blown head gasket.

thanks big jim.. it kinda doesnt really matter now my truck is smashed and im still not quite sure im gonna fix it.. might turn it into a wheelin rig but i dunno..

if i can find a 01 ext cab edge with a blown motor ill swap em out and see whats wrong with mine when its out.. but untill then its just gonna sit forawhile

you just totaled your truck!?! what the hell happened man?

nah didnt "total" it just side swiped a bank and it hit the cab a bit because it rolled onto the side and went along the bank like that
